Supernatural: Southern Comfort Review

Garth to the rescue!

Garth to the rescue!  DJ Qualls who plays geeky, oddball hunter returns to the series this week and literally steals the show, helping the Winchesters solve a series of violent murders in a small town and helping the brothers mend their strained relationship.  When a wife literally runs over her husband with the family car and then can’t remember a thing, Sam and Dean arrive on the scene in their usual guise as FBI agents, only to find Garth, acting as a Texas Ranger (even though it’s not Texas) is already investigating the crime.

And that’s not all, with Bobby now gone, Garth has taken up the reins as the hub of the hunter network, doling out advice to other hunters, maintaining a coat full of cell phones, and even wearing one of Bobby’s old baseball caps.  Dean is at first offended that Garth would even think of trying to take Bobby’s place but Garth, generally so easy going, emphatically puts Dean in his place.  Scolding him over the fact that someone had to do it with Bobby dead, Dean trapped in Purgatory, and Sam giving up life as a hunter.

As the murders escalate, the trio soon discovers that a cursed penny, belonging to a dead Confederate soldier, is letting the soldier’s vengeful ghost possess whoever holds the coin.  Meanwhile we get numerous flashback’s to Sam’s life with Amelia but I have to continue to ask what is the endgame?  There’s got to be more right?  Or could his life really been that…mundane?

In a key scene, Sam confronts Dean about Benny, referring the monster/girl that Dean killed last season without Sam knowing.  Wonderful scene and made all the more impactful by Sam threatening that he might have to kill Benny someday.

But Qualls really made this episode go with some hilarious bits of humor but also showing more and more that he is a very capable hunter in his own right.

I love it that the show is so aware of itself, Sam just comes right out and asks Garth if he is the new Bobby.  Had me cracking up.

Real fun episode... probably even the best this year.

I just love Garth as a character.  Sure he's goofy, sure he's sometimes inappropriately affectionate, but I LOVED that he was able to pick up the penny with zero affect.  I didn't need the further explanation to just say wow...too many people keep stuff bottled up and hold grudges...it really says something to me about his character that he doesn't have any ill will for anybody.

And I can't wait to have Cass back this week!
