What They Say
Nobody enjoys a good fight more than "Kiibo" Miyazawa, a high school student whose father is training him in the family's secret martial art. In his quest to be the heir to the Nadashinkage fighting style, Kiibo has honed his skills by defeating formidable foes like pro-wrestler Koji Funada and Samon the Beast. But now he wants to test his strength in a new sport: full-contact karate with boxing gloves! Only sanctioned moves are allowed in sports karate, which means that Kiibo will have to learn the rules fast!

The Review
To some the martial arts are nothing but games. These people practice and put in hours daily repeating the techniques, modifying the skills so they remain within the rules applied. The rules are occassionally broken and these players know exactly how to do so without being caught. The martial art might mean more to them than just a job, however their obligation to the rules prevents them from ever becoming warriors. Tey need not seriously fear for their lives. They can feel relatively safe that their livelihoods will guarantee them security (to a point).

Miyazawa Kiichi (Kiibo) has only lived and fought as a warrior. Every fight takes him to the brink. Every fight could mean death. There are no conditions and victory only comes when a warrior gives up - Todo Vale (no holds barred)!

Kiibo was beat by the rules and now he is going to face someone so strong they make the rules to stop him. Its grappler versus brawler and the only way to beat either of them is by beating a 95mph fastball with your face! (No seriously!!)

TOUGH continues to be a prime example of great testosterone filled seinen manga. Saruwatari sets this match-up perfectly by placing two young men with two different fighting styles who admire each other on a collision course where their schools, their friends and their lives are at stake. Saruwatari has completely captured what what Todo Vale is about and veryone is gonna feel the pain, including the readers... This volume - the beefy characters, the action, the translation and the fiery cover design - had me shedding male of appreciation! And it pains me to know Viz is only releasing one more.
