Battlestar Galactica Action Figures

New, Originals and 3 Retro Commercials

By Robert T. Trate     January 16, 2009

Ronald Moore’s Battlestar Galactica has been nothing but surprises. From the first time I saw the original trailer for the new mini series up until I heard Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watch Tower “ I have been blown away. This was not the space battles, shaggy hair and gee whiz Battlestar Galactica of my childhood. This was a realistic portrayal of Glen A. Larson’s original space opera. As realistic as the show is it cannot escape the fan boy necessity of having action figures made. There have been numerous versions of the main characters in action figure form and even a resurgence of the original show’s actors as their characters. Any fan of either show has to love the detailed new figures and appreciate the retro coolness and collectability of the originals. The time is now if you want to strike and get the best of what Battlestar Galactica has to offer. After the last episode runs the prices will undoubtedly go up and they’ll be just a little harder to find. I have picked a few choice BSG figures both past and present that are worth picking up.

Cylons. You have to have Cylons. Sure Apollo, Starbuck and Adama are kind of necessary too but if you cold only have one BSG figure it has to be a Cylon. The originals are fun (see header picture) but finding a mint condition one might cost you as much as buying a new 12 inch Cylon Centurion Silver Version from Amok Time. Having seen them last year at the International Toy Fair they have what the original 12 inch BSG figures never had, perfect likenesses to the characters on TV. Amok Time is doing the entire cast and keeps adding to the line. Their Sideshow Collectible quality is awesome and their prices are reasonable. See their entire original BSG line here.

In what must have been a last ditch effort to get kids to want more original BSG toys they created a mail away figure. Like the Star Wars mail away figures one only had to buy four figures and mail in the proof of purchases to receive a free figure. The Cylon Commander or Gold Cylon was pretty sweet and really stood out amongst the other now beaten up models. He would eventually join the toy rack and like the rest of the original BSG line fade into history.

There have been a few exclusives here and there for the new BSG series. None of them have had the sheer terror and coolness that the 2008 San Diego Comic Exclusive figure displayed. From the episode the “Valley of Darkness” comes a Cylon with blood splattered across his breast plate. Not only is he bad ass but a perfect reminder how vastly different this BSG is from the original. If you were unable to pick one up at the SDCC they are still available on Amazon.com.

Even though the new BSG has remained without an alien encounter the original featured three different alien races in the series. The first race was the Cylons and like their more (now human created) modern counterparts they were bent on the destruction of the human race. The second, seen only in the pilot/ movie, were the Ovion. Think giant green bees that lived off of humans. Their action figures make a great addition to the line but with their singular appearance perhaps Mattel should have made an Apollo figure instead. The third and last race came from the “Lost Warrior” episode of the series. Oddly enough they encounter Apollo (Richard Hatch) as he squares off against a gun slinging Cylon (seriously).

There are tons of new BSG figures slated to come out in the following months as Ronald Moore’s version comes to a close. Diamond Select Toys will be releasing an Admiral Cain in the likeness of Michelle Forbes. They will also release a three pack including Admiral Adama (Edward James Olmos), President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) and the limited President Lee Adama (Jamie Bamber). All four of these figures will be released on February 25th 2009 (see them in the gallery).

Since this week marks the return and end of Battlestar Galactica I thought it would be sweet to feature as many Battlestar Galactica Toy Commercials as possible.

I'm probably going to have to get a classic Toaster.  Still waiting for a decent 1/6 scale Centurion from the new series.  There was one out a few years ago, but the articulation was nhil and it was a little overpriced for being a slightly poseable statue.  Sideshow, Hot Toys or even DST needs to get me a nice chrome Cylon with a working eyebeam to stand toe to toe with my remote controlled Dalek from Doctor Who.
