Toy Maniac: Gort Toy Madness for San Diego Comic Con

With details about to surface in San Diego about the remake I thought I would pick Gort fromThe Day The Earth Stood Still as my spotlight toy of the week. Over half a century later there is still shock and awe when he walks on to the screen. Klaatu’s imposing robot, Gort (see header picture), has been given the royal treatment by Amok Time. Gort only has 6 points of articulation and stands at an imposing 16 inches tall. That is half an inch taller than Kenner’s Chewbacca! Fear not, Gort does come with Klaatu in a limited Edition 2 pack ($109.99 ea.) limited to 500 pieces. However, if it is only Gort that thrills you and not a near perfect likeness of Michael Rennie as Klaatu then you can purchase Gort all by himself ($74.99 ea.). I saw both of them at the International Toy Fair in New York and what made them both stand out was the craftsmanship and detail in which they were constructed.

If the price tag for a doll of Gort is a bit much or dolls aren’t your thing. Then check out Rocket USA’s wind up robot of the greatest science fiction robot of the last century. At least this Gort walks. The box is great touch as well.

Marvel/ Hasbro q&A Round 2

The second round of Marvel/ Hasbro’s Q & A is back and I would like to thank fellow Maniac darkheart00 and AMiSHPiRATE for contributing questions. If you have any questions for Marvel/ Hasbro about their past, present and future toys place them in the comment section below.

Maniac Question (from darkheart00): Many people want to collect figures released early in the line and put teams together (example the Avengers) but are forced to pay eBay prices to do so. Will there be any reproductions or re-releases of the first few series of figures?

Marvel/ Hasbro: We're not planning to re-release any whole series…but we will be bringing
back a couple of the "hard to finds". You'll find out exactly who later this week!

Maniac Question (from AMiSHPiRATE): Will Darkhawk ever have his own figure?

Marvel/ Hasbro:We hope so. In terms of character selection, he's been on the list of possibilities for a long time! No promises, but we'll assure you that the name comes up regularly.

Mania: Are there any Skrull/ heroes figures planned to coincide with the Secret Invasion (like Skrull Elektra)?

Marvel/ Hasbro:If I did tell you…are you sure you could Trust Me? I've been feeling a bit Skrully myself as of late. Afraid we can't reveal the answer to this one until the Con!

Side note: Funny how there was already a picture of them on San Diego Comic Con. The Skrulls have taken over!

Mania: The line has a style all its own in the terms of appearance. Occasionally a figure will take on a certain artist look; Ed McGuinness’s Red Hulk comes to mind. Will the line ever adopt a look by Tim Sale or Tod McFarlane?

Marvel/ Hasbro:Our design team takes inspiration from a long list of comic artists both
classic and contemporary…you're probably going to hear some really fun news on the specific artist front at SDCC this week!

Mania: What is the ratio of variant figures made in relation to the regular action figures?

Marvel/ Hasbro:It's different for every variant and is highly dependent upon how big the
difference is. If it's a subtle difference, there will be fewer mixed in than if there is a really big difference (for example, there will be ample yellow AND black costumes for Wolverine in the Target exclusive Hulk wave).

Check out Damon Brown’s Maniac Manifesto’s Top 7 games at E3 for starters. If you will be at the San Diego Comic Con this week check out the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics Panel. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon will be on hand along with comic scribe Jimmy Palmiotti discussing the pairing of these two incredible titles in their first video game showdown ever. The bomb will drop with all the information at the SDCC and Mania will be there! Stay tuned.
