Toy Maniac: Guns, Gadgets and Giganta for Halloween
By: Robert T. TrateDate: Thursday, October 02, 2008
Last week I featured “Toy Helmets for Halloween” that, with minimal effort, could give you a justifiable reason to pick up a cool toy and help make a great costume. This week the Toy Maniac is bringing you the weapons that will make the most simplistic of costumes great. Without these items you are just a guy or girl wearing some odd clothes out of the closet.
Being such characters as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Spider-Man are great on Halloween. Not only are they easy but most people will immediately know who you are. However, just as equally iconic are Doctor Who, Doctor Loomis, Lex Luthor, Ash and Apache Chief. The following weapons and accessories along with a trip to the thrift store or someone’s closet will deliver a great costume.
Baldies and Doctors
For Halloween there is always someone at a party that is dressed as either Michael Myers or Superman. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to good and bad but both are impervious to bad sequels. With a bald cap you could easily be the nemesis of either Superman or Michael Myers. Now, what makes or breaks your costume outside of a great suit are their weapons. Pick up a standard short revolver for Doctor Loomis and you’ll be screaming, “I shot him six times!”. For good old Lex Luthor you have to have a Kryptonite Crystal Shard. Perfect to deflate the dork in the corner wearing the spit curl and the fake abs. Luthor was always the more appealing character anyway and this will keep you from wearing a giant green ring pop.
When it comes to dressing up as Doctor Who really anything goes. The tenth Doctor probably has the best and most modern wardrobe (see gallery). After you put on a suit, trench coat and Converse Sneakers you have to a Sonic Screwdriver. Without it you are just over dressed for the occasion.
LUKE AND HAN
Their outfits are easy. Blue vest, white shirt and black pants and you are Captain Han Solo. For Luke go in all black and be the Jedi you always wanted to be minus the whining. Without a good blaster at your side or that Lightsaber how could you even call your self either? Now the tricky part is in deciding which to buy. Get a toy department blaster or a Master Replica version Lightsaber. Going as either one is fine but it is still a great excuse to buy some kick ass toys. Personally, I recommend Hasbro’s blaster covered in flat black spray paint for Han. The "Become A Jedi" Lightsaber Construction Kit is my choice for Luke as it has three different handles and blade colors allowing you to change the costume and be a different Jedi next year.
REALLY CHEAP BUT FUN
So, spending a ton of money is not in this year’s budget. I totally understand. Here are three really easy costumes that will bring down the house at your next Halloween party. Ever thought of going as Apache Chief? Every one of us has a pair of khaki pants in the closet. Find a brown vest, put on the khaki’s and make yourself a head band and you are ready to say "Inyuk-chuk" ("Big Man"). What will really make your outfit is a Heroclix’s Giganta figure (find one at your local comic book store). You can keep her in the palm of your hand and rule over those run of the mill store bought costumes.
Using the Khaki pants again with a blue denim shirt and you’ll be practically halfway there. Attach a toy chainsaw to your arm and you are Bruce Campbell’s Ash from the Evil Dead Saga. Always a fan favorite and you’ll have a full night of saying “Groovy”, “Come and get some”, Yo she bitch, let’s go” and my personal favorite “Give me some sugar baby”. A little blood or a lot and you are ready to walk out the door or into the past.
Those store bought Spider-Man outfits are lame. Either they are ill fitting or have holes in the eyes (safety, schmafety). Instead be Peter Parker. You can wear regular clothes and two well placed fully loaded web shooters under your sleeves. Not only will you be ready to go out if the party is lame but you can web up the goof who bought a Spider-Man costume and failed to pick up the most essential part.

Already in the works:
Having made his first appearance on the final page of Amazing Spider-Man #569 Anti-Venom already has a figure in the works. With how fast Hasbro and Marvel are turning out figures now (like Skrull Elektra and Red Hulk) one has to raise an eyebrow in speculation. Is Marvel creating characters or toys?
Action figure of the week:
After completing Star Wars the Force Unleashed I ventured into the toy aisle to check out Hasbro’s offering of Unleashed based figures. Maris Brood in the game was a formidable and tragic opponent however her figure looks as if it is a wishbone just waiting to be split in two. The action figure of the week is the Imperial Evo Trooper. Having killed over a hundred of them he is worthy of joining the collection and taking its place next to the classic stromtroopers of old. Look for him in both the Star Wars the Force Unleashed and the Star Wars Legacy Collection packaging.
Spider-Man has his own empire of action figures based on numerous cartoon shows, a live action series and now three movies. This is probably the worst Spider-Man action figure when it comes to points of articulation but it still has its charm.
