Toy Maniac: Hasbro SDCC Releases
By: Robert T. TrateDate: Thursday, August 07, 2008
Star Wars was the clearly the main attraction at the Lucasfilm booth at the San Diego Comic Con. Yet, off to one side, there was an incredible display of the next Indiana Jones figures to be released. There was enough goons and henchmen from the various Indiana Jones movies to have an ample supply of bad guys for your action figure enjoyment. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom may be the darker and least popular in the series but their figures rock. Molo Ram with a flaming heart and Willie Scott in the sacrificial cage will join every fan’s collection. The must have figure though is Young Henry Jones Jr. in the likeness of River Phoenix.
With Star Wars the Clone Wars hitting theaters and The Clone Wars hitting TNT and the Cartoon Network in the fall the action figure machine that is Star Wars will be in full force. Look for figures from the new animated movie and TV show. Target and Toys R Us have exclusive figures for both. Already the novels, the video games (who would have thought Jodo Kast would have ever had a figure?) and comic two-pack figures have hit the shelves since their SDCC premiere. As a Star Wars fan though I have mixed feelings about Hasbro making figures out of moments that were deleted scenes. If they have exhausted all other possibilities then it might be all right. Somewhere in the back of my mind I think this is George Lucas planting a seed for these scenes to be in the next re-release of the original trilogy.
A few weeks ago I posted a notice about the new giant sized Millennium Falcon. It sounded cool and something that any super fan with a fat wallet would love to add to the collection. After seeing it this super fan with a thin wallet (and two Falcon’s already) wants it. Finally four seats in the cockpit and one of those escape pods that were supposed to have been jettisoned after take off. Check out the pictures. It really is an improvement over the original and the Power of the Force Edition.
Finally there were a ton of G.I. Joe figures that debuted at the SDCC. Many are updated versions of their Eighties counterparts. They bring back memories for sure but now seem as if they belong to the next generation. The SDCC Hooded Cobra Commander in the blue suit exclusive sold out on the second day. Look for him to sky rocket in price on eBay and collector sites.
Next week I will feature the third and final part of my SDCC toy coverage which will highlight Sideshow Collectibles and a few oddities that I saw on the floor.
