SDCC Toy Maniac Edition

Toy Maniac: Hasbro SDCC Releases

Star Wars was the clearly the main attraction at the Lucasfilm booth at the San Diego Comic Con. Yet, off to one side, there was an incredible display of the next Indiana Jones figures to be released. There was enough goons and henchmen from the various Indiana Jones movies to have an ample supply of bad guys for your action figure enjoyment. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom may be the darker and least popular in the series but their figures rock. Molo Ram with a flaming heart and Willie Scott in the sacrificial cage will join every fan’s collection. The must have figure though is Young Henry Jones Jr. in the likeness of River Phoenix.

With Star Wars the Clone Wars hitting theaters and The Clone Wars hitting TNT and the Cartoon Network in the fall the action figure machine that is Star Wars will be in full force. Look for figures from the new animated movie and TV show. Target and Toys R Us have exclusive figures for both. Already the novels, the video games (who would have thought Jodo Kast would have ever had a figure?) and comic two-pack figures have hit the shelves since their SDCC premiere. As a Star Wars fan though I have mixed feelings about Hasbro making figures out of moments that were deleted scenes. If they have exhausted all other possibilities then it might be all right. Somewhere in the back of my mind I think this is George Lucas planting a seed for these scenes to be in the next re-release of the original trilogy.

A few weeks ago I posted a notice about the new giant sized Millennium Falcon. It sounded cool and something that any super fan with a fat wallet would love to add to the collection. After seeing it this super fan with a thin wallet (and two Falcon’s already) wants it. Finally four seats in the cockpit and one of those escape pods that were supposed to have been jettisoned after take off. Check out the pictures. It really is an improvement over the original and the Power of the Force Edition.

Finally there were a ton of G.I. Joe figures that debuted at the SDCC. Many are updated versions of their Eighties counterparts. They bring back memories for sure but now seem as if they belong to the next generation. The SDCC Hooded Cobra Commander in the blue suit exclusive sold out on the second day. Look for him to sky rocket in price on eBay and collector sites.

Next week I will feature the third and final part of my SDCC toy coverage which will highlight Sideshow Collectibles and a few oddities that I saw on the floor.

Okay. Action figures based on deleted scenes? I simply can't afford enough scotch for this news.

Love the Cobra Commander in a tie figure though.

I didn't see Cobra Commander down there. That figure is pretty dope!

Figures from "deleted scenes" proves once again what a greedy shill Lucas is. In the 25 yrs. since ROTJ came out I've never heard of or seen a "deleted sandstorm scene". Ridiculous.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Fuck George Lucas in the mouth.

"Blue suit" Cobra Commander may have sold out immediately but the "black suit" version was there all weekend. I picked up one of the "black suit" versions. Not as limited in quantity to be certain but if you don't want to pay a premium for the figure then definitely the way to go. Still an SDCC exclusive just not as limited. Great figure at any rate.

Oh and if crazy ol' George wants to make up some new characters or use old deleted scenes and give me new figures, I'll take that over the 500 millionth edition of the same Luke I have 6 of already any day.

Looking forward to the TOD figures. Mola Ram looks great.

The sandstorm scene is real; I've seen the old ROTJ teaser and that's where the scene is best known from. It was nothing more than a transition scene of the heroes leaving Tatooine after saving Han.

No need to get butt-hurt over it either way. It's not as if Lucas makes the figures personally.

Oh no doubt that the scene is real TheLastCleric (i've seen photage and pictures in the Star Wars Insider). As I said this is nothing more than seeding for another re-release. Lucas said that there will be a 3D release one day what could be better than a sandstorm!~Robert (thanks for reading by the way, all of you Maniacs)

I know for a fact that Lucas himself casts and hand-paints every single Star Wars action figure. He calls the experience "cathartic";)

Not to be grammar Nazi, but c'mon.
