Toy Maniac: A Look at what Debuted at the SDCC
By: Robert T. TrateDate: Thursday, July 31, 2008
The Toy Maniac was on hand at the San Diego Comic Con this year. I snapped as many pictures as I could of what I thought all you Maniacs would love to see. I got a lot of pictures of Hasbro’s ever growing Star Wars line. If Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t thrill but you still wanted a few Indy figures for the collection, rest easy, they are coming! I finally saw Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen along with some great models from the movie. The Mighty Muggs line will continue to grow but still lack any DC characters. The one line that really showed some promise at the SDCC was Mattel’s take on the DC Universe.
The Watchmen
The Watchmen ruled the SDCC. Nite Owl’s Ship was definitely a must see attraction at the Warner Brothers booth. Down at the DC Comics booth Warner Brothers unveiled new Watchmen figures (both 9 and 12 inches tall), Mini Busts and High End Collectibles. The next wave of Watchmen paraphernalia only added to the hype that started so very small at last year’s SDCC and this year’s NYCC (see the series 1 figures).
Marvel Legends
The last couple of weeks in the Toy Maniac Column I had a Q and A with Marvel and Hasbro about the their legends line. Apparently I kept asking the right questions because the answer I was getting was, wait for San Diego and all will be revealed. Hasbro debuted several waves of figures and many had release dates. The majority of the figures were Wal-Mart exclusives. What was really exciting about the next line were the Jim Lee likeness figures, a Yellow Daredevil, Ultimate War Machine and the Skrull figures.
Mighty Muggs
The Mighty Muggs are “100% recycled awesomeness”, according to the box anyway. The line is growing. Even more Marvel, Star Wars and Indiana Jones characters are joining the line. Several G.I. Joe characters will join the collection too. The SDCC debuted great new additions in The Red Skull, The Silver Surfer, Dr Henry Jones Sr. and Galactus. My favorite was the Mighty Muggs Comic Con Exclusive Peter Parker.
DC Direct and Mattel
When I first saw the Mattel DC Universe line at the International Toy Fair I gave it big yawn. There were a few choice figures that debuted at the SDCC that give the line a second chance. Mattel just might give DC Direct a run for their money. DC Direct debuted an awesome Toy Man and a killer Black and White Joker but it was G'nort that stood out above them all.
Sell outs and ebay watch
All the comic book conventions are getting their own toy exclusives. Some companies are catching on and offering these special items online, but does that really make them exclusive? No. DC Direct produced 6,000 Batmans and 2,000 Jokers to celebrate their 10 year anniversary at the SDCC. The Joker sold out the first day, so look for him to skyrocket in price on eBay.
Mezco Toyz had several SDCC exclusives (see my review). They sold out of many on the first day. Noticeably, their Warriors: Red Faced Fury variant sold out the first day. He was priced at $65.00 and was retailing the next day for $400.00 at the dealer’s tables. Having only 200 made exclusively for the convention made him the figure to have.
