Thespian John Travolta has joined Denzel Washington in the Tony Scott-led remake of THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123, reports Variety. The trade reports that Travolta will be filling in the shoes of the lead hijaker, a role previously held by Robert Shaw in the 1974 thriller. He'll be pitted against Denzel Washington as the chief detective, a role previously held by Walter Matthau in the original film. David Koepp handled the screenplay for director Scott while Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing through their Escape Artists shingle.

Plot Concept of the 1974 Film: Four armed men, led by Bernard Ryder, hijack a New York City subway train and demand 1 million dollars for the train and the lives of the passengers held hostage. Lt. Zachary Garber of the New York City Transit Police must contend with City Hall red tape, the unrelenting demands of the hijackers, and the ever-ticking clock in his efforts to save the passengers and bring the hijackers to justice.

wasn't there a tv remake a few years ago?

Yep. It wasn't well received by critics.

I know it's a remake but the basic concept has been done to death. And these actors have both done similar roles. Why bother?

I like Denzel. I also liked Travolta as a villain in Face/Off.

I really loved the original. Whenever I even see the word Pelham, the great music from that film pops into my head. "Da-Dum Dum DUM!"
I don't usually like remakes but this doesn;t fit into the recent trend of 20-Year-Old Horror-Movie-Being-Remade-To-Make-Money-Off-The-Name. And I don't think the original is known that well, unfortunately. They've got a great cast and crew. Let's see what they come up with.

I liked this movie when it was called "every other movie Denzel has ever made". C'mon, how many more Tony Scott/Denzel/Cop movies are there going to be? :)
