Trevor Jones returns to THE DARK CRYSTAL by way of Marvel Nemesis and Gettysburg

By: Randall Larson
Date: Wednesday, November 30, 2005

After notable successes this year scoring such films as the cops and robbers action flick, CHAOS and the Japanese military thriller, AEGIS, as well as the celebrated re-release of his score for LOCH NESS, Trevor Jones returns on the spotlight again with a score for EA Games' recently released action game, Marvel Nemesis - Rise of the Imperfects, which features icons from multiple super hero families including Spider-Man, Wolverine and Elektra.

From super-hero CGI action to historical nobility, Jones has also scored FIELDS OF FREEDOM, a historical destination film created exclusively for a new, state of the art digital theatre now under construction near the National Gettysburg Battlefield in

Pennsylvania. The screen will be roughly the size of an IMAX screen and the project is scheduled to open around March, 2006.

After that, Jones will return to the milieu in which he gained his first major notoriety, with the score to Brian Hensen's THE POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL, a sequel to the laudable 1982 fantasy that featured The Henson Company's magnificent life-size puppetry. The film, which is scheduled to be released in 2007 by Disney, depicts Jen and Kira as king and queen fighting to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

Dude Dark Crystal has got ot be one of the best movies ever. I was born in 1980, actually today is my birthday, ha ha. Anyway, I will definitly be looking for the sequel. Dark Crystal, Goonies, Explorers, Neverending Story, and Labrynth I never miss these movies when they come on TV. These are the core of my childhood, got em all on DVD except the Explorers. These are all excellent movies, go check em out.

As much as I love The Dark Crystal, I think Hollywood should leave well enough alone. Dark Crystal is one of my all-time favorites from my childhood, but I don't see the benefit of a sequel at this point.

However, I will reserve any final judgement until the film is released. Until then, I'll quote every Star Wars character ever with, "I got a bad feeling about this."

I also heard rumors about this being CGI. If that's true, the movie will most certainly suck. I mean come on they're called Muppets for a reason, not CGIuppets!

Hopefully, this is just a rumor and the only CGI will be a few background plates and such.

Dark Crystal and The Secret of Nimh are cherished movies to my childhood. The music theme to the Dark Crystal rings in my ears always.

I believe they are using puppets for this (enhanced with CG when neccessary) and I'm for puppets all the way! I loved the Vorlons in Hitchhiker's because they weren't CG and visually FELT REAL!!!

Apparently they have writers from the original movie onboard writing the sequel and once again using Brian Freud's concept designs. I am nervous about a sequel to such a cherished masterpiece, but I am looking forward to the continuation of the story.

Oh, and if any of you haven't seen MIRRORMASK, it's another Henson Studios production and quite interesting visually. It felt like I was back in the world of the STORYTELLER and LABYRINTH. Worth checking out.

Long live the muppets and the Henson legacy!!!

Emtorrini, buy the movie, you won't regret it. It's one of those films you'll pop in about once a year. Great visuals. In the accompanying documentary, Jim Henson claims it to be one of the works he's most proud of. AND Gary Kurtz left after Empire Strikes Back to work on The Dark Crystal INSTEAD of Return of the Jedi. Things to think about.

(The DVD is about $17 to buy and the deluxe edition is about $40).
