What They Say
The Mafia-run world of Infinity would be a dangerous place even without the death-defying "chess" tournament that Princess Sakura and her companions have entered. But Sakura has decided to risk everything - even her friends' lives - for the contest's secret prize.
Sakura is dead set on winning the Mafia's chess tournament. However, she has a hidden agenda for participating in the dangerous contest. Unbeknownst to her traveling companions, there is a secret prize that will be granted to the tournament champion, and Sakura is desperate to get it. However, will her determination to win waver when the final battle puts Syaoran's life at risk?
CLAMP continues with a depressing plot trend with Team Tsubasa's bonds crumbling even further, and surprisingly, it is Sakura who is doing the breaking up. Added to that are more snatches of Fai's mysterious past. There is not enough to form a clear picture, and frankly, Fai's actions at the close of this volume are perplexing. However, the glimpses we get are enough to show that he has a lot of baggage behind his disarming smile.
But though the storyline is getting as dark as their Goth outfits, CLAMP livens things up with more "chess" matches, including the final battle, which is funny in some respects. I remarked in my Volume 18 review that the Mafia's "chessboard" and CLAMP's Angelic Layer has several parallels, and the Mafia's chosen fighter for the showdown is none other than Hikaru from Angelic Layer. So while the final fight is action-packed and Card Captor Sakura fans will get to see Syaoran wielding a very familiar looking Chinese sword, it is somewhat odd to see Syaoran fighting for his life against a character that is a doll in another CLAMP universe.
