TV on DVD

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, September 09, 2007

So, you’ve finished watching that new HD-DVD edition of Heroes: Season One and now you need something else to quench your thirst for all of your favorite series still not back from the summer hiatus, or maybe you’re looking to catch up with a series you haven’t watched before so you can add it to your DVR this fall. Easily done, because some of our favorite shows are hitting DVD over the next few weeks.

Recently I reviewed Supernatural: Season One here on Mania and I highly enjoyed it. On Tuesday, season two hits DVD so I’ll be picking that up so I’ll be ready for the season three fall premiere. Also coming to DVD Tuesday is Charmed: The Final SeasonCharmed isn’t a show I watched, but I have some friends that are just rabid about the series. Also hitting shelves on Tuesday is Bones: The Complete Second Season. Again, here’s another series I don’t watch but I know several of you guys really dig it. I think the only reason I didn’t hook into it was because it conflicted with something I already watched when it first started. If you’re on the nostalgia tip, you’ll want to pick up Fraggle Rock The Complete Third Season. If you’re into the classic animated series (and who isn’t) then the latest in the Tom and Jerry collections should be on your list, Tom and Jerry The Spotlight Collection Volume 3. Finally, The Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes Volume 2 (1994) hits DVD on Tuesday as well. I am really enjoying some of the current FF comic books so I may have to check this out. I know it won’t be as good as the comics but it can’t be as bad as the current FF animated series currently running on Cartoon Network.

Of course Eureka is in my list of “must see TV” this week but the big one for me has to be the season finale of The 4400. This season has been really strong, better than last season for the most part, so as sad as I am to see the season end, I can’t wait to see how it ends. I’m also giving Torchwood a shot. I couldn’t ever get into Doctor Who because I’m kind of over the whole time travel thing, plus when I’m watching sci-fi, I tend to prefer to see it in the future and the good Doctor made way too many trips into the past for me.

This is the future: New York is one big 60-story traffic jam, stewardesses dress in belly-baring Gaultier, shape-shifting Mangalors (imagine rubbery bulldogs with automatic weapons) prowl the streets, the elite vacation on the interstellar ocean liner Fhloston Paradise and a planet-sized ball o' badness is hurtling toward the Earth at unimaginable speed. The only one who can stop it is fetching waif Leeloo (Milla Jovovich), whose "I dreamed I went walking in my Maidenform bra of the future" scene should insure her a place in the hearts of 14-year-old boys of all ages. Brash, often very beautiful, and art-directed within an inch of its life, this juvenile fantasy-adventure (writer-director Luc Besson conceived the story as a teen) pits Leeloo and crack starfighter turned taxi driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) against evil capitalist Zorg (Gary Oldman) and his running Mangalors. The fate of the Earth hangs on a quartet of ancient stones, which must be aligned in an ancient Egyptian temple..

Save for one episode on this animated disk, it was horrible. No wonder why I heard that the series is getting cancelled.

The Fanastic Four animated series that came out before this one, I guess its 10 or 12 years old, is far superior to the new one.

"The Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes Volume 2 (1994)"

If the picture is any indication, that's the new series, with the above title. The series from 1994 was part of the Marvel Action Hour, and never had WGH in the title that I'm aware of.

So, which is being released, the old series or the new?

TiVo'd Torchwood haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Next week sounds a lot like the second episode of Angel. Anyway. Looks good. Loved Jack Harkness in Doctor Who.

Really want to know if Steve Moffat will be writting any of the episodes. He solidified his claim on the grenius title with Jekyll, and he wrote the best three epiasodes of Doctor Who full stop.

BTW those epsodes being The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances(these two introduce Jack Harkness), and The Girl in the Fireplace(brilliant and tragic).

Anything he writes now I'm up for. Moffat blending of comedy and drama is remaniscent of Joss Whedon.

"I couldn’t ever get into Doctor Who because I’m kind of over the whole time travel thing, plus when I’m watching sci-fi, I tend to prefer to see it in the future and the good Doctor made way too many trips into the past for me."

So...he goes to too many places for you? Would you rather he pick a small town full of geniuses and just stay there?

If you've seen a few episodes and don't really dig the themes or the characters, then ok.

But if it's that there's just not enough lasers for you, then too bad. You're missing the strongest show Sci-Fi Channel doesn't publicize enough.

Maybe you should review an episode or two.

If you like Stephen Moffat ones then I am pretty sure Blink (the episode shown as on this week) was also written by him and so you should check it out.

Finally saw the Torchwood premier. Didn't quite hit all the notes from the start as well as the new Doctor Who, but it definitely has some potential.

I like Jack and the police girl. The others are okay but could use some further development. The computer chick seems to have the most potential there. The other two have a bit of a redshirt vibe.

I'd like the to see a more clearly defined purpopse for the team and fopr Jack than collecting space junk and playing with it. What Jack's long term plans are and whether he still wantshis memories back.

I'd like to know what this big thing that's supplosed to happen in the 21st century is. And what Jack's Torchwood has to do with the London Torchwood that claimed to be using alien to rebuild the British Empire, where Jack' trying to keep any one power from getting hold of it.

So far kind of reminds me of the first season of Angel. Still finding it's own identity seperate from the original show. Should prove and interesting ride.

And of course the Angel series ended up being excellent, often as good and sometimes even better than Buffy.

Also heard season 2 Freema Agyman(aka Martha Jones) will be joining the cast.

On balance I'd rather her have stayed with the Doctor but it sounds great for Torchwood and the writers have earned a little faith.

Thaks for the info on Blink. I was prepared to be dissapointed when I heard it would be mostly sans regular cast like Love and Monsters. Now I'm looking forward to it.

And anyone who hasn't seen Jekyll, seriously, check it it's now on DVD and BBC-Amrica will hopefully rerun it often. They certainly should. Kep an eyev out for a standout performance from Gina Bellman as Jackman's(Jekyll's) wife. And of course James Nesbitt's dual role is a sight to see. Supporting roles including the future Bionic Woman are also excellent. And of course the writing is brilliant and full of unexpected and well earned twists. Here's hoping for a Jekyll series 2 o folllow up of some kind.
