Last week’s episode revealed that Tony and his demon rebels believe that Sam is the son of the devil. The show has been hinting to something of that nature for some time with all the discussion of how Sam gets treated so special by the devil and how the devil never spends time with his minions. This week finds Tony testing Sam looking for him to reveal his devilish abilities and sure enough in the opening attempt Tony’s group is successful in making Sam do just that.
Overall, this is a good episode – but it’s a standard episode – it doesn’t feel much like a season finale. With a season finale, there should be some big reveal or major cliffhanger – something to make viewers leap from their La-Z-Boy and scream “I want next season now!”. There are some small story evolutions, but nothing huge. The writers do a great job of playing with the Sam character in this episode, first making it obvious that he is the son of the devil – even placing them on a ball field playing catch – but by the end of the episode, the question of where Sam came from is as relevant as ever. Sam’s parents get a good bit of screen time in this episode fighting with each other and hiding a secret from Sam. Initially, it appears that the secret is that Sam is the son of Satan but by the end of the episode it appears that the secret is that Sam’s father is a demon. How else could he be buried alive and then be dug up seeming just fine? So, is Sam the son of Satan or simply the son of a demon allowed to live on Earth? There are plenty of potential directions this story could go. Again, all the writers do is hint at all of the different potential directions the story could go rather than set a path for the next season. Another show on the CW, Supernatural, is really good with the cliffhanger ending that still sets the pace for the next season of the series scenario. Take a note Reaper writers.
Other than the Sam “the son of the devil” story arc, the rest of the episode hopped around a lot going from Sock and the Succubus – a really funny subplot – and a completely under developed demon of the week. Do the writers feel they’re required to have a demon for Sam to catch every week? It felt like the whole reason this demon was even in the episode was an excuse for a gag with Sock. With that said, the gag was damn funny. The episode would have played better with the demon of the week completely removed from the episode and more focus placed on the Sam story and the Sock story utilized as comedy relief. Finally, the episode rushes so quickly to the finale that it felt overly anti climactic. The father being buried alive came off like an after thought. There should have been a scene with Sam returning to the burial site and trying to save his father. Also, we see Tony fly Sam out of danger going into a commercial but the return from the break starts in a completely different place making the scene feel like more time had passed than the writers may have intended.
Cancun was a good episode but it didn’t feel like a season ender. Also, the episode had a rushed and under developed ending due to the episode having so many plot threads to deal with. Sock did chew the scenery this week and that’s a good thing. He’s never on screen too much. So, a bit of a let down for a season finale but a good enough installment in the series overall.
