TV Review: REAPER - Cancun

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Friday, May 23, 2008

Last week’s episode revealed that Tony and his demon rebels believe that Sam is the son of the devil. The show has been hinting to something of that nature for some time with all the discussion of how Sam gets treated so special by the devil and how the devil never spends time with his minions. This week finds Tony testing Sam looking for him to reveal his devilish abilities and sure enough in the opening attempt Tony’s group is successful in making Sam do just that.

Overall, this is a good episode – but it’s a standard episode – it doesn’t feel much like a season finale. With a season finale, there should be some big reveal or major cliffhanger – something to make viewers leap from their La-Z-Boy and scream “I want next season now!”. There are some small story evolutions, but nothing huge. The writers do a great job of playing with the Sam character in this episode, first making it obvious that he is the son of the devil – even placing them on a ball field playing catch – but by the end of the episode, the question of where Sam came from is as relevant as ever. Sam’s parents get a good bit of screen time in this episode fighting with each other and hiding a secret from Sam. Initially, it appears that the secret is that Sam is the son of Satan but by the end of the episode it appears that the secret is that Sam’s father is a demon. How else could he be buried alive and then be dug up seeming just fine? So, is Sam the son of Satan or simply the son of a demon allowed to live on Earth? There are plenty of potential directions this story could go. Again, all the writers do is hint at all of the different potential directions the story could go rather than set a path for the next season. Another show on the CW, Supernatural, is really good with the cliffhanger ending that still sets the pace for the next season of the series scenario. Take a note Reaper writers.

Other than the Sam “the son of the devil” story arc, the rest of the episode hopped around a lot going from Sock and the Succubus – a really funny subplot – and a completely under developed demon of the week. Do the writers feel they’re required to have a demon for Sam to catch every week? It felt like the whole reason this demon was even in the episode was an excuse for a gag with Sock. With that said, the gag was damn funny. The episode would have played better with the demon of the week completely removed from the episode and more focus placed on the Sam story and the Sock story utilized as comedy relief. Finally, the episode rushes so quickly to the finale that it felt overly anti climactic. The father being buried alive came off like an after thought. There should have been a scene with Sam returning to the burial site and trying to save his father. Also, we see Tony fly Sam out of danger going into a commercial but the return from the break starts in a completely different place making the scene feel like more time had passed than the writers may have intended.

Cancun was a good episode but it didn’t feel like a season ender. Also, the episode had a rushed and under developed ending due to the episode having so many plot threads to deal with. Sock did chew the scenery this week and that’s a good thing. He’s never on screen too much. So, a bit of a let down for a season finale but a good enough installment in the series overall.

Speaking of Supernatural, where is your review of that? It was such an awesome finale! Anyway, this was a good episode but you are right in that it didn't feel like a season finale. Considering though that this show doesn't really fit the regular tv show formula, it didn't take away from it. The demon of the week needed to be there, 1) to set up the Sock gag, but 2) and more importantly to give the Devil a reason to go up and talk to Sam. He pretty much only shows up when there is a demon to be caught. Granted though, it seems that the Devil only uses the demons as an excuse to come and talk with Sam. I hope that Succubus shows up again next season. She`s hot. I really do like the writing in this show. What other show could have Lucifer as an actual likable character? I'd actually want to be this dude's friend, granted he`s the Devil, but still.

I think Supernatural was the ONLY show (that I watch) that had a good season finale. Someone at work commented that there didn't seem to be as much hype about season finales this year. I wonder if that's still fallout from the writers strike?

Reaper is a great show, I was so glad when I heard they're coming back next season, can't wait til they realease the season on DVD. And I also hope the Succubus is back next season. I think Sock and Ben should make up with her and then send her to go suck the life out of Sara, that way we could see that B get what's coming to her and get a good lesbo kiss scene.

Two thoughts about the Son of Satan thing with Sam: 1) After seeing the dad survive the burial I thought what if the dad is actually the son of the Devil and Sam is the Grandson, that's usually a common thing, the son doesn't live up to dads expectations so he turns to the grandson. Maybe the deal was you can live on Earth but you have to give me a Grandson to take over the family business. 2) Maybe in exchange for giving the Devil a Son, Sam's dad was granted immortality.

Your second thought is exactly what I was thinking macthorn. I`m thinking that Sam's dad was sick, so he made a deal with the Devil to give him Sam, and he not only got better but is now immortal.

This show was such a surprising hit. I'm probably on the end of the CW's demographic, but I enjoy Reaper a lot. The comedy is dead on for the 20s-30s generation. My only real complaint about the show is that they seem to be pushing out too much in the first season. With Andi getting together with Sam, Andi finding out about Sam's other job, the move into an apartment next to demons, Sam may or may not be the Devil's son ... I just felt like the show was in the third season already.

It's going to be difficult for them to keep the show fresh in the seasons to come, but if they have a plan ... then great. I think maybe they did too much because they thought they were only going to get one season. Anyway, Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas (the show's creators and majority writers) have a winner on their hands and do as good a job with a show with a male lead as J.J. Abrams does with a female lead.

I have to say that I liked this episode. Yes, the escaped soul of the week was just a mcguffin to do the Sock gag, but it was a funny gag. And as for not ending on a big cliffhanger, good! I've always thought the season finale cliffhanger is pure sadism, designed to screw with the viewers and gin up interest in the next season. Thing is, I'm going to watch next season; they don't need a hook (if they really want a hook to bring people in, have a episode where Andi needs to wear an outfit like the one she wore to the wedding). Sam's dad (or is he?) surviving being buried alive is enough to keep me wondering without torturing me. Though I am thinking that maybe macthorn is onto something with that Sam is the grandson of the Devil theory. The Son of Devil story has been done a lot (The Omen, South Park, etc.) but I don't think anyone's done a grandson of the Devil story.

I love this show and I was happy to hear it's coming back next year even if it is mid season. This episode didn't feel like a season finale but it was entertaining and it kept my attention so in the end that's all that matters if you can keep viewers watching.

I agree with mike10. This show has some of the best writing and is a fun break from serious SciFi. I think now that they have a definite second season they can flush things out a bit more. With the show being in "limbo" so to speak it probably made doing a season Cliffhanger kind of difficult. Good luck next season, I will be waiting.
