TV Review of SMALLVILLE: Arctic

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Smallville has been a sadly disappointing series for the past couple of years. The rumor for a long time was that this would be the last season, and it should have been – especially since a couple of the primary actors in the ensemble cast are leaving the series. The only hope you can have is that the creators of the show are also leaving, putting the future of the series in different hands. Maybe some fresh blood can reinvigorate the series, maybe.

This season finale is a series of endings, endings basically written to get rid of some characters. Lana is the first to go after she awakens from her comatose state. Her exit from the series is quite surprising in its success. Lana hasn’t been relevant in years and you’d think her exit would be an easy one. What’s written in this episode is actually a little moving – not moving enough to make her character exodus a regret for fans – but moving nonetheless. The other big exit, the well publicized one, is the exit of Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor. Lex is Clark, or Superman’s most popular nemesis but it doesn’t mean that Clark can’t face other villains. In fact, a new villain might offer a new perspective on the Clark character in the series.

This season, and really this series has been a build up to a final conflict, a final standoff between Clark and Lex. If there’s one thing this series has done well it has created a complex relationship between these two characters. They started as good friends then evolved to enemies but even at their worst they still shared a connection. Some part of Clark still believed in Lex, believed that there was some good in him. So, when the final conflict finally does happen it encompasses the last five minutes of the episode. Five minutes, that’s it. Some of the dialogue between them in those five minutes is good, mostly on Lex’s part. Clark never seems to get real with his feelings even when Lex seems to have no problem. It all felt anticlimactic and rushed.

The big problem with the episode is that two much had to happen in this one episode. Clark had to defeat Brainiac, Lana had to recover and leave, we had to learn Kara’s true fate, Chloe had to get sick, then get better and then get proposed to, and finally Clark had to face off against Lex. Knowing that Kreuk and Rosenbaum are leaving the series as regular cast members, their characters should have been the entire focus of the episode. Lana and Lex should have been given some breathing room to develop a solid ending for them and the standoff between Clark and Lex should have been epic. The relationship Clark has with these two characters is personal and epic at the same time in the overall story arc so the climax of these characters should have been given that respect.

Again the review of this episode – as is common of nearly every review of every episode of this season – is built on complaints. There are a few minor highlights, Lana’s videotape was a bit moving and Lex got a few good lines in the brief climax of the episode. That’s really about it. For next season to be a success, Clark needs to get to work at the Daily Planet and he needs to start being a real super hero rather than just protecting his friends. The seeds for all of this have been planted. Cross your fingers for this fall’s return…

Well, while I agree that this season finale was in no way as "epic2 as it should have been and at points felt rushed, I still enjoyed it. I never have high expectations for Smallville, so when they hit me with a great episode I am happy. I`m not saying this was a great episode, though. I really don't think that they needed to prolong Lana's exit. The way they did it was great. She pretty much defines who Superman or at least Clark should and will become. What I find kind of annoying but something that makes sense, is that everyone keeps telling Clark that he needs to accept his destiny as a hero but he just seems to ignore them. How many people can slap him in the face about it, before he realizes it. Something huge has to happen I guess. Jor-el, Chloe, his father, Green Arrow, and now Lana have all said the same thing. Clark needs to get a clue.
I also don`t think that they needed a huge battle between Lex and Clark, because they already did that when he was Zod. I would have liked some more back and forth dialogue, maybe a fist fight while the Fortress fell on top of them, would have been cool.
The writers do seem to be moving toward Clark working at the Daily Planet. Lois tried to get him a job and I bet we see Perry White next season. Since they are so far removed from the "normal" Superman mythos, they should have Lois and Clark get together now, too. It can't hurt the show.

If he and lois got together now. It'll be the whole "i can't hurt lois like i did lana especially after what she said about the green arrow belonging to the world crap or whatever it was."

They have to trim some fat that's for sure.

For next season I want more stories that fit 2-3 ep's.

I guess they should work on Lois and Clark's romance. I still am not on board for Lois however. They needed a better actress.

WTF happened to mom? The house turned into a 90210 home with kids popping up there for no reason. Probably time to lose the farm. It has not been the same since Dad left anyway. I still miss Pa Kent. The stories were better when they were involved.

I have to say my fellow Mania Brothers and Sisters, Me and my girl has been faithful to smallville since day 1. We both really enjoy the show alot and always look forward for the next. But I have to agree that we were disappointed with this season finale. I expected alittle more and wanted to be on the edge of my seat at the ending. Me and my girl was like "thats it??". If next season going to be the last I really want to excited and want to have a very cool closure to it. I am not sure how they going to mix Doomsday into it,but hope they do it really good. I just hope they dont do a Brainiac on it and make Doomsday look like a regular guy. Oh god I hope they dont do that I really will be DISAPPOINTED TO THE MAX. Maybe they want to use Doomsday VS Superman as a closure for the seris as the final showdown which they have the most epic battle in smallville history. Fingers are cross for the next season. I will stay faithful to the series and keep watching to the very last episode. In ending note me and my girl will always be a smallville fans and love the show. :-)

Hate to be the bearer of bad new WolfmanX, but that is exactly the route they are going with Doomsday. According to Mike Aussellio, he is going to be a regular guy with no memory of who he really is. I don`t know exactly how they will work it, but apparently he learns that he is this Doomsday character, which to me, kind of lessens the characters impact.

Wouldn't it be great if at the end of the series Clark is saved by the real Superman? Suppose the world that encompasses Smallville is an alternate version of our world, and maybe that's why the creators of the show can change some of the mythology. It would be nice if, the Superman we all know, showed up to save Clark and put him on the right path to his true destiny. Its just a thought.

sure thing Silverspear, and then Monkeys could fly out of his butt. Each show is a part of the Multiverse. A seperate entity in and of itself. When these different dimentions cross nothing good comes of it. except maybe in Doctor Who. But that is a whole different barrel of monkeys. The hardest part that the show producers will have is a costume. If they go traditional, they will have the issue of the show becoming hokie and then becoming a joke. If they go for a new wave look, they run the risk of people not knowing who or what the story is.

First I disagree with your assement that the last couple of seasons have been disappointing. The first season was great. The next two were really just rehashes of the first season and were the ones that were disappointing. I would say that the seasons following 3 were the best as they started to expand on the Kryptonian mythology. This has been the case until all the way untill this season. Unfortunately this season has been extremely disappointing. I expected more with the inro of Supergirl and other tha a couple of really good episodes mainly around Lex this season has had no real common theme like the others.

As for the finale, I agree that it was just a mess of forced closures. The episode should have just focused on Lana and Lex.

As for next season, I don't have much hope for Doomsday a character that should never be showing up at this time in Superman's life. Also, I am glad that Chloe is back but honestly I am so sick of her. Especially this season where they pretty much have ruined her character.

I actually love Lois and would love to see more of her next season. I think she is closest to what I expect Lois to be. Anyway I hope they turn things around next season.
PS: just wathced the Aquaman pilot again and CW surely missed the boat on this one. There was a lot opf promise just from the pilot.

Lets hope the regular guy with no memory starts having bones piece out from his skin. Lets hope he mutates to the Doomsday what we came to know. There is always hope right guys?? UMmmmmmm Guys Hellooooooo anyone. Dont leave me alone alone alone..............

I agree. A common factor with a lot of the episodes, is that the last act, usually the one that should be epic or climactic, tend to be rushed and anti-climactic. It never delivers the punch you would have expected. More screen time should have been given to the "climactic" confrontation between Clark and Lex instead of just five minutes. And second, how are we supposed to believe that Lana miraculously awakes her coma and is able to immediately check herself out of the hospital without any questions asked?? That is just really implausible.
I hope that the new producers allow more time to flesh out the stories and not try to just rush the ending. If you can't tell the story in a hone hour episode than split it into two episodes.
Also, I agree that putting Clark in "tights' seems too hokey. Maybe they can design a functional battle uniform that can be worn with the cape.
