Based on Actual Television Shows
Greetings Cinescapers! Last week I cried laryngitis, this week I'm too busy to flip through the pages of THE HYPOCHONDRIACS BIG BOOK OF LIES so it looks like I have leprosy; which I'm sure will put me down for a week and has a nice side effect of sending me to Hawaii. So I'm off to sunny Waikiki to get leid. Who would have thought disease could be so rock'n?
Last week David Malone offered up THE MONSTER SQUAD as a neglected American Movie Classic, and the response was overwhelming; three readers wrote in! Seems everybody and their chimpanzee is crazy about the film that, as Malone kind of pointed out, was the source of the popular saying "Wolfman's got nards" and is subsequent variations ("Dracula's got nards," "Martha Stewart's got nards," "Donald Rumsfeld's got nards," and so on, ad infinitum.) So go rent/buy it where-ever videocassettes are still available.
Do you have an American Movie Classic you feel the myopic TV WASTELAND has been neglecting? Send it via e-mail to TVWasteland@cinescape.com. We just might put it in the column, cause you see TV WASTELAND'S got nards.
Below you'll find some television shows listed, because, after all, this is a television column.
MONDAY, MARCH 29
THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI/SHANGHAI EXPRESS/THE SHANGHAI GESTURE/WEST OF SHANGHAI 8 pm, TCM) Four movies with Shanghai in the title. The third is another Von Sternberg flick about a woman who drags her ex-lover's daughter into decadence. The fourth is from John Farrow and is about a Chinese warlord who rules over an area where Americans are fighting over oil.
