TV Wasteland: Do Bigger Booms Make Better Stories?

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Monday, June 23, 2008

There’s no keeping this image under wraps as it takes up an entire wall of a building. This painting depicts the entire planet blowing up - quite a leap from the last mass destruction painting that just showed New York City blowing up. This is a very Hollywood blockbuster sort of evolution for this series. Rather than craft a new and innovative story, let’s just make the destruction bigger. Sure, there could be, and probably is, more to the story than can be discerned from the image but still you have to wonder if all that’s coming is season three are more villains and bigger booms. The image of this mural was taken during filming for the series in an alley in down town L.A.

This type of worry is valid due to the lackluster season three. It wasn’t a travesty but it was a step down from season one rather than a step up. So the image is bigger, and the destruction that it hints at is bigger. Does that make it better? The drama could be ramped way up with this even greater threat than before but even if that’s so will the action scenes live up to the promise. Even in season one the action scenes were much weaker than they should have been and the trend continued for season two.

Does this cynicism simply come from being unexcited about the return of the series? Is it fair to be hard on the show considering the fact that season two was so stymied by the writer’s strike? These questions could make for valid arguments in favor of the series. Let’s just say Heroes has a lot to prove when it returns in the fall. If Lost can make a comeback, so can this series.

The only things on this week worth a mention are Fear Itself and The Venture Brothers. That’s really about it. The first of the summer rip off of Japan game shows starts this week with I Survived a Japanese Game Show. Do you care?

Monday

AMERICAN GLADIATORS (NNC, 8PM EST)

In contests featuring two married couples, a wrestling coach tries to take down a financial adviser. In the ladies round, a sales rep battles a social worker.

IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON (DISC, 9PM EST)

This documentary chronicles the American space program of the late 60’s and early 70’s with interviews and rare archival footage.

Tuesday

I SURVIVED A JAPANESE GAME SHOW (ABC, 9PM EST)

An elimination contest follows 10 Americans as they compete in a zany Japanese game show. In the opener, contestants must eat food from a plate perched on the head of a teammate running in place on a treadmill, and "launch" themselves into a giant replica of an auto windshield while dressed in bug costumes. Tony Sano is the series host; Rome Kanda hosts the game show.

FAMILY GUY (TBS, 7PM EST) MARATHON

Two hours of one of the best animated series on television. This is definitely not a waste of your time.

Wednesday

MYTHBUSTERS (DSC, 9PM EST) CONCRETE GLIDER

The team attempts to make a concrete glider fly.

Thursday

FEAR ITSELF (NBC, 10PM EST) IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH

A bride (Maggie Lawson) receives a mysterious note on her wedding day accusing her groom (James Roday) of being a serial killer. Directed by John Landis. Christie Laing, Sonja Bennett and Marshall Bell also star.

Friday

DOCTOR WHO (SCIFI, 9PM EST) SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY

Mysterious shadows menace an abandoned library, the latest destination for Donna and the Doctor.

Saturday

COPPERHEAD (SCIFI, 9PM EST)

A mass of copperhead snakes besiege a small western town. How many of these can be made?

ROBIN HOOD (BBCAM, 9PM EST) LARDNER’S RING

A mortally wounded messenger from King Richard arrives with news for Robin from the Holy Land.

Sunday

THE VENTURE BROTHERS (TOON, 11;30PM EST) ENTER THE BAD SEED

As of the writing of this article, there was no description for the episode available. But we assume it should be good, right?

METALOCALYPSE (TOON, 12AM EST) KLOKBLOCKED

As of the writing of this article there was no description for the episode available.   Characters will be growling and screaming. They always do....

Let me just say, that this season of Doctor Who has been off the chain and is only going to get better. You guys are like 2 or 3 episodes behind. Believe me. It is the Bomb!
I wonder who the artist is? Its not Isaac. He`s been dead for awhile.

Wow. Steve Lackey's really continuing to ball family guy. Given how the series has fallen apart since being picked up after cancellation, I'm suspecting he's getting a kickback from fox or tbs. Of course, now that I'm calling him out on that mania will censor this comment like they did with all the comments calling out mania on running a press release for that new book "the girl who owned a city," er, I meant "gone."

lol, AMiSH. I was wondering what the hell happened to the comments for that article. Looks like The Illuminati are all over this site. Just read yours from your profile. Personally I liked it all better when the material was called "An Episode Of Star Trek". Bonk, bonk & all that.

Probably Peter doing the painting, pony. Unless Sylar regained those abilities at the end of two.

Stephen I hear your fears on this season of Heroes. The show could very well be spinning into unrecognized self parody ala 24. I agree it’s tough to judge season two since we only got half of what was intended but the half we did get was just a retread of season one IMHO. I am so not in the mood for another half season or more of mutant road tripping. Here’s hoping they advance the focus this time around. The resurrecting cheerleader blood was a silly little device too. I’ll be tuning in at the beginning of the season but if my ass ain’t getting kicked out the gate I don’t think I’m in for very many episodes.

Dude, I just did a search on that trash book. Apparently AICN had a similar issue where they took down comments people were putting up that were dissing it. Looking over at amazon? bunch of people trashed the trash, so the author came out (at first under an alias, then he latter admitted who he was) defending himself. guy comes across as a huge douche. he's paying all these sites to put up positive reviews (which is probably why mania struck the comments section). I'm all for selling out as much as the next guy, mania, but you lose a lot of credibility when you do that.

Man, what is the deal today with the typos? First, the Green Hornet was played by Bruce Lee and now Heroes had a "lackluster season three." Stephen, did you somehow gains Hiro's ability to travel in time and check out the new season then traveled back to today to tell us all how lackluster it was and that we shouldn't bother watching it?

Wow. Comments have been disabled for all three "Gone" articles. Hmmmm. I know this doesn’t have anything to do with Stephen and the TV stories but since it’s been mentioned in the comments here let me just add that this seems a bit disingenuous, Mania. Part of why we come here is to discuss amongst ourselves. Why would that not be allowed?

AMiSHPiRATE • Jun 23, 2008, 12:18pm •
the answer is simple joey: because the "writer" of the "Gone" "book" is paying mania to post those stories. As he openly admits in a forum for his book over on Amazon, he actively modifies web coverage of his "Work" so as to protect the youth from being exposed to inappropriate content (such as people calling him a hack).

mania must be getting paid a dashing dollar (pretty pennies won't do it in this economy) to be both giving him as much coverage as they are as well as for silencing our voices.

Actually, I'm interested in ISAJGS. So what if it's a rip off!? I know we all pretend to hate sequels, remakes and adaptations, but really we don't care. While originality is nice, we just want to be entertained, and if ISAJGS is entertaining - and if they ever have Human Tetris, it should be - then I welcome it. However... the two events mentioned in the above mention and the previews I've seen, admittedly, seem to be less than exciting. I'll give it a couple weeks.

I agree, I lost interest in Family Guy looong ago.

Heroes, with so much time off, a little rehash is okay, but some really unexpected plot lines would be nice. And I really wish Sylar would have had to gain all new powers, but so much for that.

I read: "TV Wasteland: Do Bigger BOOBS Make Better Stories?"

And of course I said, "yes."

"This type of worry is valid due to the lackluster season three."

ah, sorry, what season?

either you live in the future or you need to check your facts. the "lackluster season" of heroes you speak of was season 2. and what was so lackluster about it? it was a good season. i think that overall people have expectations that are way beyond what they are going to be able to do on a tv show. even on heroes.

ok, so the end of season 1 was a bit of a let down, considering that i was hoping for an all out rockem sockem time between peter and sylar. and yes the end of season 2 was a little abrupt. virus falls, peter catches, all done.

but what do you expect? they have to be logical about thier endings, and they have to end some how, and within a budget and time constraint.

at least they have good endings. they could pull a george lucas and pull a terrible ending out of thier ass.

seems to me that we should leave the judgement of the third season till after they are done showing it to us.
