TV Wasteland: Everybody's on the FRINGE

All Eyes were on Fox for the FRINGE Premiere

Did you watch the series premiere of Fringe? Apparently everyone else did according to Nielsen. Preliminary numbers for the 90 minute premiere averaged 9 million viewers and a 3.2 rating/share in the adults 18 to 49 demographic. Those numbers made the premiere the highest rated of the evening for that coveted demographic and the biggest drama debut for FOX in a couple of years.

FOX and series producer J.J. Abrams had a lot riding on this series premiere having put reputations and big dollars behind it. Abrams seems like a sure bet having created some of the best TV has had to offer over the last several years with LOST and Alias, but he most recently had a flop on his hands with Six Degrees proving he’s not infallible.

TV isn’t like film - where one good weekend defines a success or not. Fringe has had a successful launch but the question is will viewers come back for another helping next week? Most reviews for the series, including our review, were favorable with caveats. The first episode was full of pacing and tonal problems and character development was scatter-shot. The concept of the series is sound and has potential though. Will you stick with the series based on the pilot? The script for the pilot had to be written over a scant few days due to the writer’s strike so future installments, given more time, could prove to be stronger with better pacing and dialogue. Lately it seems like the best series on television start off weak and require some level of dedication to succeed and find their footing. The most recent example is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The first three episodes of that series were fairly grueling to get through, but after that point, the series was excellent at best and entertaining at worst. Another example of this situation is Heroes. That series had the pacing of a turtle for the first four installments but it picked up and became top notch competition for LOST during that first season. So, whose giving up on Fringe and who’s sticking it out? You can bet we’ll be following it for a while longer....

More series premieres are hitting the small screen this week! Of the two shows that are returning this week Supernatural is the most highly anticipated and most likely to actually be good. Smallville is coming back too, and it’ll get watched because well, it’s on TV. Fringe and True Blood had OK premieres last week so this week, the shows really need to prove themselves with solid episodes. Also of note this week are new episodes of Prison Break, The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Burn Notice.

After getting past the (X-files like) flashlights on darkened (???) plane scene, I found myself liking Fringe. Instead of the typical solve the mystery, it turned into save the partner. So I will watch it. I just won't change the channel after House. Looking forward to Supernatural, and I will watch Smallville eventhough I think I should have ended the same season the mini-jla was intro'd. I want to see how the Legion of SH are handled later.

I liked Fringe well enough. I'll be tuning in again to see how it progresses. The LSH is going to be appearing on Smallville? Cool!

I thought it had a good start. Like most shows, the pilot is never as good as the show ends up after developing... so if it can only get better from here, I'm down. I see a lot of potential. They hooked me with the Maximum Dynamic commercial, "Your World is Our World". Reminded me of Umbrella Corp.

I enjoyed Fringe and am looking forward to watching it. I will watch Smallville again, though I'm not sure why.

I too enjoyed Fringe. I thought the production value looked great, very high-end. I also thought the opening plane sequence with the co-pilot face was completely amazing, especially for TV. It's no wonder "horror films" are leaning toward PG-13 ratings. If Network TV at 8pm is getting away with bodies falling apart and see-through skin (which also a fantastic visual effect) why bother going to R? Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what they bring to the upcoming episodes. And yes, the Maximum Dynamic commercial was a great touch. (reminds me a little of what they are doing on Eureka w/ the Degree ads)

Well, the production value on Fringe had better be good because they reportedly spent 10 mil on the pilot alone. I just hope that it doesn't suffer from now on, because there is no way they`ll spend even close to that per episode if they want to stay on the air. I am looking forward to Supernatural and even Smallville just to see the JLA and find out what happens. I`ve come this far. I may as well see it to the end.

Fringe didn't grab me. Everything about it seemed too familiar and generic. I definitely seem to be in the minority though. I'll check out a couple more hopefully before giving up. Everyone psyched for Shirley Manson tonight? :D

Fringe, True Blood and SC Chronicles are waiting for me in my Tivo. Love the chronicles first season as far as tv shows go. But don't want them mixing this timeline with the films, keep them seperate. Looking forward to Smallville also.

I tuned in for Fringe at 8 o'clock but got disgusted with the "the day the earth stood still" promo after 15 minutes and promptly tuned out. I'm thinking I'll wait till the season is over and watch it straight through.
