TV Wasteland: The Raping of Indiana Jones

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Monday, October 13, 2008

Why is anyone surprised that Matt Stone and Trey Parker had George Lucas and Steven Spielberg rape Indiana Jones in the season premiere of South Park last week? These guys have said many times that they fully expected the series to end years ago so every episode they get extra is now just an opportunity to push the envelope. Apparently, they got permission to do the episode from Viacom - which owns Comedy Central the network where South Park airs and Paramount Pictures the company that produces the Indiana Jones films- but Viacom is saying that the episode wasn’t portrayed to be so intense to them.

In the episode, Lucas and Spielberg rape Indy in several scenes that are send ups of rape scenes from other movies such as Deliverance and The Accused. The episode features South Park’s trademark commentary and the creator’s intense feelings about the Indiana Jones film while still being fresh and funny. The question again is how could Viacom be surprised about the outcome after giving permission for the episode? Could this all be an elaborate marketing ploy to get the word out about the return of South Park and the upcoming DVD release of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? If only that were true but alas the suits at Viacom are probably ticked off about the episode. The end result ends up being great, at least for South Park.

Ball games are killing TV! Well, they are a little bit. No Sarah Connor Chronicles or Prison Break this week due to ball games, anyway. Chuck and Heroes are both new as is Fringe, Supernatural and Sanctuary. Also, of note is the second episodes of Life on Mars and Eleventh Hour.

I bet those paramount guys didn't even see indy, like the police detective... probably don't realize the truth that needed to be said... they raped our friend... monkeys???? Aliens???? (hell after the monkeys the aliens didn't seem so silly)... I mean come on!!! They raped our friend!!!! And all I did was go see Indy twice, hoping the second time I had just went into the wrong movie the first time...

Indy did suck. Glad they did the ep that way. They will probably not show that ep anymore now.

Anyone else feel like the china side of the episode was meant to be a full episode just in case the suits wouldn't let them show the truth about indiana?

It was great - any time the 2 of them get a public trashing the better. Kudos to Trey and Matt for voicing what many of the unbrainwashed feel.

I was laughing my ass off, I didn't know anything about this episode when i watched it so the surprise factor helped.

I agree with the China thing, it seemed just a little to thrown in there, but it was a great episode. Man, those guys just have no problem ripping on things, and I think that is awesome. Lucas's face was the best when he was raping Indy.

I wanna see a proper send up of all the people who say they hatred this movie so much they saw two or three or as one guy on Amazon proclaimed SIX times before desiding they hated it.

I'm seeing a Carney booth with millions of fanboys lined up in front of a man-love-from Lucas and Spielberg sign paying money to go and running out crying rap, rape rape, whil heading straight to a nearby ATM getting another wad of cash and rushing to get back into the same line for some more lovin. Or maybe just a few fan boy so we can see them cry rape the secon and third time they went in and paid for it.

Or maybe have a trial where Lucas and Spielberg are being tried for the rape of someones childhood. And in the middle of the part where the victim insist it was in no way consentual he lwaps acros the court kneels at their feet and offers his car, his housead his first born cild they'll do him again.

I wonder if the irony has dawned on the "unbrainashed" that many of them have contrbuted two or three or SIX times as much to the immense profits this movie took in as those of us who thought it was a fun, charming trip down memory lane and saw it but once.

You do realize that this episode was also making fun of all those whiny, pedantic twerps who actually use the rape analogy to describe their distain for Lucas and Spielberg, don’t you?

I mean, think about it: Some geeks get so upset over this fourth Indy that they are actually traumatized and they want the Beards prosecuted.

Whether or not Matt and Trey hated KOTCS, it’s pretty obvious they are taking some serious satirical stabs at the fan base and for good reason; those of you who have been screaming like young girls over the fourth film really do sound like a bunch of twats and your criticisms of this movie have been incredibly inconsistent.

The whole “nuked the fridge” catchphrase is actually one of the most obvious examples of just why detractors are completely full of your own bullshit. Do none of you see the irony that the fridge scene is labeled as ridiculous in a franchise that has seen a bailout from an airplane in a rubber raft, the attacking of a Nazi vehicle caravan on horseback, and discovering a 500 year old Knight of the Templar in the middle of a desert? And Indy hiding in a refrigerator to avoid an atomic blast is supposed to be unacceptable?

Or what about the argument that aliens don’t “belong” in this franchise? Again, this is a series of films that has dealt with Judeo/Christian mythology and Hindu deities so I really don’t see why aliens are such a stretch.

KOTCS was a fine coda to one of my favorite franchises and while it wasn’t quite as good as the original trilogy, I respect that it was trying to do something different while at the same time giving us an Indy that was still relevant. The problem with so many of the detractors is that you focus on the small issues rather than appreciate everything the film got right, but I guess some people can’t enjoy much of anything these days without foisting their pedestrian little analysis on the rest of us. Commercially and critically, KOTCS was a success, and many of the criticisms that have been levied against it could just as easily be made against the last two films in the series so again, this whole things really comes down to selective criticism, inconsistency and hypocrisy.

And incidentally, I saw the South Park episode and though it was funny precisely because it was blasting everybody.

Good. I fgured as much and I'd already been wishing I'd seen the episode now I'm sure I want to see it.

My favorite "unlikely" was in Crusade when Indy had a bunch of Nazis lined up to fight him and one shot from one stolen pistol went through all six or so Nazis. I have to laugh every time I see that one. No expert but thinking that would have happened in any real world setting. And from the look on Indys face apparently Spielberg didn't think it would either.

I like that Indy got to use his brain in the warehouse scene in KOTCS and also his book marts to deciphher the clues. And aliens? Why not?

When Stan, Kyle & the gang ran out of the theatre screaming I was laughin' my ass off. That's exactly how I felt during the movie.
