TV Wasteland: SARAH CONNOR GETS TO KEEP CHRONICLING

Could it be that FOX actually makes a good decision?

Fox Renews Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for the full season

Fox is a hard network to love, and a hard one to hate. When no one else was doing interesting sci-fi TV, Fox was giving it a go. The problem is these days Fox still likes the genre but if the new series doesn’t immediately find a massive audience the network tends to give up on the show. This wasn’t always the method of operations for Fox but it has been for the last several years.

With that in mind, when an interesting series is in its formative episodes, slowly developing its fan base similar to the way the X-Files found its audience, fans are concerned. When a show gets misfired in the marketing by Fox and its ratings suffer fans get really scared. The Sarah Connor Chronicles started off strong this season but no one seemed to know that the series was actually coming back. As you might expect, the ratings dropped on the show. It has been on the bubble of cancelation all season long and many fans have been nailing the lid on the coffin for some time. In a surprising turn Fox has renewed the series for the rest of this season.

Digging deeper though the decision doesn’t seem to be as much of a surprise as you might believe. Fox had been banking on a 24/Dollhouse block in the Spring that’s just not going to happen because Dollhouse won’t be ready to premiere in the Spring. So, Fox is now falling back on Sarah Connor Chronicles as a part of a Monday night block with 24. Speculation has run rampant on the web, and here in this article, that Dollhouse may never even see the light of day. This new development makes that theory an even stronger possibility. While it doesn’t bode well for Dollhouse, it is good news that The Sarah Connor Chronicles will get a full season two.

As if things couldn’t be more busy on Monday nights, VH1 is premiering a new series on that night called Scream Queens. The show is a reality series where women compete to become a “scream queen” in the next SAW film. Based on all of the major activity already on Monday nights, it doesn’t make much sense for VH1 to drop a show for horror fans on this night. The Sarah Conner Chronicles is back with a new episode just in time to celebrate its full season renewal on Monday night. Heroes, Prison Break, and Chuck are all also new on Monday and all are recommended viewing. Fringe, Supernatural, and Sanctuary are also new this week.

Talk about your good news/bad news situation from Fox. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Sarah Connor get picked up, but I was eagerly anticipating Dollhouse. I knew that Fox had asked for a retooling of the series, but I didn't realize that the whole series is now likely to not see the light of day. I was really looking forward to seeing Whedon's latest on-screen effort.

Where's the listing for Life on Mars? Unless something pre-empted it at the last moment, it's supposed to be scheduled for a new episode this week. I thought I heard that it was doing well in the ratings.

Fantastic.  That's great news, I've been enjoying this season.  To bad about Dollhouse though, that sounded interesting.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.  Or, a TV series that is on  the air and that I like is worth two prospective series that I might or might not like.  Even if one of them is by Joss Whedon.  I'm happy that Sarah Connor was given a full season.

I saw Eleventh Hour two weeks ago and Life On Mars last week.  Life On Mars is by far a better show.  The writing and acting is much better.  Not that Eleventh Hour is bad (though some of the dialogue was beyond hokey), but with Fringe on the air Eleventh Hour is redundant.  The shows seem to cover the same teritory.  The time is long gone when scifi and fantasy fans would watch anything they showed, just to get our fix.  Now there are so many shows in that field that we can afford to be choosey.

New episode of Stargate Atlantis too you know.

Why don't you cover Numb3rs?  Yeah, it's not, strictly speaking, scifi.  But it IS a show for smart people and in a culture that golrifies stupidity so often, that's a really good thing.

Great news about Terminator!

I do like My own worst enemy show so far.  I also like the new Robinson C series if only for the HD shots of the island.

Sanctuary is also good for wide CGI shots and stories are keeping my interest for now.  I hate Carter's new Mary Poppins accent, and there is the too good fighter hot  that would never happen in real life chick.  And the fake Daniel looking guy does not feel right for the show.  They probably should have used a slacker kind of regular guy with a special purpose to fill his shoes.  I would be surprised if this makes it to 2nd season.

In Sci-fi channel news I hope they tweek the Stargate Voyager show that is coming up.

Ever since FOX axed Space: Above and Beyond years ago I haven't wanted to latch onto anything of theirs.

As big of a whedonite as I am, I like the idea of one scifi show on fox sacrificing itself so another may yet live.

Has anyone watched Crusoe?  Is it any good?

okonomiyaki4000 10/20/2008 7:00:31 AM

OH please, the first season of Sarah Connor was alright but season two has been a total crapfest. The new villain is totally idiotic, killed a guy for calling her a bitch? A little sensitive for robot. Shirley Manson's acting is horrible. It seems there's no end to the pointless characters being introduced. Cameron and Reese are both underused. Sarah is super lame, all motherly and not tough at all. And what's with the religious undertones? At the end of the first episode it looked like we were going to have a robot with a messiah complex and a messiah with a robot complex.

Just cancel this trash. Oh and Fringe is even more unwatchable.

darkheart00 10/20/2008 8:41:53 AM

Fringe is a great show, John Noble is fantastic. Nuff said.

Wiseguy 10/20/2008 8:58:39 AM

I'm glad for SC. One of my favorite shows. See, Fox doesn't always fuck up. Hopefully viewership will pick up and we can live happily ever after. But on Mon nights it's a tough fight for viewers, thank God for tivo.

No mention of My Own Worst Enemy. What's up with that. Liked the pilot, much better than I expected.

Family Guy has been really funny so far IMO. I thought it was going to hit the wall but not yet so far.

Redheaven 10/20/2008 9:59:03 AM

Great news. I love Sarah Connor Chronicles. Glad to see fox makin' the right descision, I think most people enjoy it. I'm really likin' Life on Mars right now too. It's funny after all these years I find out I STILL have a crush on Denise Huxtable!!
