TV Wasteland: Stargate's Back Minus One Character

By: Stephen Lackey
Review Date: Monday, July 07, 2008

Don S. Davis, most well known playing a character from the Stargate television franchise, Major General George Hammond, died on June 29th at age 65 as a result of a massive heart attack. Davis played Hammond as a regular character through season ten of Stargate SG-1 until he had to cut back to guest appearances due to a medical condition. Davis’ final appearance as Hammond comes at the end of July with the release of the direct to DVD Stargate film called Stargate Continuum. Davis also appeared in series such as The Dead Zone, Supernatural, and Flash Gordon. Twin Peaks fans remember Davis as Major Gerald Briggs. Stargate Atlantis returns to the SCIFI Channel this Friday.

There’s no Fear Itself this week and it’s actually disappointing. The series seems to be improving each week as long as the trend continues. The show will be back next week. The good news is that Burn Notice is returning Thursday night on USA. This series premiered with geek cred due to Bruce Campbell co-starring and it turns out that he wasn’t just stunt cast. Campbell appears to be having a good time with the role and it’s a good thing because he needs something to put him in a good mood. At his last couple of appearances ,he seemed to have been losing his normal coolness in favor of grumpy old man syndrome.

Along with the return of Stargate Atlantis, SCIFI Channel also sees the return of Ghost Hunters International. Due to popular demand, Secret Diary of a Call Girl is now on the schedule apparently only because fan favorite Billie Piper stars. A new series is actually coming to CBS prepackaged in its own coffin. All that’s left to do is to push in the nail. The series is called Flashpoint and it centers around hostage negotiation and a SWAT team sniper in particular. The concept is over cooled having been done to death on network television over the last several seasons with none of those series surviving past their first several episodes. Plus, the series is debuting late on Friday night. How long do you think it’ll last?

I watched Stargate: Continuum this weekend. It was great to see SG1 back in action again and the plot of the episode was very cool. You have seen SG1 get out of a lot of situations in the 10 year span but you just don't see how they'll get out of this one, but its SG1. It was also great to see Don Davis and Richard Dean Anderson, who has put on some weight. My only beef with Continuum was that I was hoping to finally see Carter and O'Neil hook up or something. They were always like the Mulder and Scully of SG1, but not such luck this time around. I hope that they decide to do another direct to dvd movie, but they really finished it off well, if they don't.
That SG: Atlantis wasn't really that spectacular of a season opener. I guess I expected a little more, but it was good.
And for those Doctor Who fans, this to me, has been one of the best seasons I have ever seen. The 3 part finale is freakin Sweet. I really hope Tenant stays for a season 5.

I too watched Continuum over the weekend, and it was great to see almost all the characters from the Stargate universe in one setting. You could tell they had fun doing it, and I really wish Sci-Fi would not have cancelled this show. They could have rolled the budgets from their crapfest movies they do into SG-1's budget.

Atlantis was okay, and it seems there mid-season episodes are better than those at the beginning. Looking forward in seeing Robert Picardo taking over, and I hope they stick with him. He is one of the best character actors, and hilarious in person.

Was away for awhile with work, so I did not even know about Don S. Davis until I read this article. He will be missed greatly.

it just really sucks that the best thing on TV this week is Wipeout and I Survived a Japanese Gameshow...

On the next episode of Secret Diary, Belle meets with her strangest client yet: a cardassian gul named Dukat.

Don't tell me TBS isn't running two hours of Family Guy Tuesday nights. This always gets a worthy mention but it's missing this week. I love the show, even in re-runs it makes me laugh more than just about any sitcom out there. Stephen, don't listen to the couple of whiners crying about you mentioning it.

I actually thought last season was the best of Atlantis. I'm not sure about Picardo, I wasn't a big fan of his character to begin with but can't blame Amanda for wanting to try something different. This could be the last season for Atlantis if the ratings don't improve.

How did you guys get to see continuum already? Advance screening or something?

Mania is a little late on the Davis news. A blogger posted that info last week. I met him at a convention, he was a nice guy.

I hadn't realized the new Stargate: Continuum DVD was out. Gotta rush to Blockbuster. Richard Dean Anderson made the show for me, so I'm looking forward to seeing him back with the old gang. I think I saw a clip of RDA on TMZ.com where he'd put on some weight.

R.I.P. Mr. Davis.

Why does TV Wasteland have a rating of A-? I think someone is cutting and pasting html from article to article.

BTW, Continuum doesn't come out until July 29th. I'm not sure how some posters here have seen it already, though I'd guess they saw it as some sort of press screening type thing.

Don said it best himself on a number of occasions...Godspeed, Mr. Davis.

You are right Redhairs, it doesn't come out on DVD until the 29th but I was perusing my favorite online TV Show and movie source 66Stage on Friday morning and alas there is was, so I watched it. I am betting THE7 did the same thing. I don't condone piracy but I admittedly take advantage of it from time to time. I would have gladly waited for the dvd but I didn`t have to.
