The trade mentions that Connelly  will portray the character of Helen Benson, originally played by Patricia Neal in the 1951 classic. Scott Derrickson is in charge of directing while Ryne Douglas Pearson and David Scarpa shared in the screenplay duties. 20th Century Fox plans to begin production in December in Vancouver.

Plot Concept: Based on the 51 classic sci-fi, an alien lands on the Mall and brings a message to humans; Live in peace or be destroyed.

It seems ironic that I would be the first to comment on this latest news.....a remake of a classic of this stature seems a bit much to swallow, however if it brings this terrific story to a new audience (who may well search out the original) may not be a bad thing. The cast thus far are indeed impressive. Dont let us down on this one guys.

Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List & Maid in Manhatten) would have made a better choice as Klaatu.

Fiennes is an EXCELLENT suggestion... in addition to being a terrific actor in his own right, he very much captures the "feel" of Klaatu from the original (sorry, undercaffeinated and can't recall that actor's name!)...

Fiennes is an excellent suggestion for Klaatu, but I think Keanu fits the role well, too. Is the remake going to be set in the 50s, or a modern take on the story?

Michael Renie (spelling?) played Klaatu in the original. Don't remember seeing him in anything else.

The story from the original movie would play well set today in these troubled times and I believe the present is where the story will be set. I hope this remake will be touched by great inspiration, unlike many of the other make-a-quick-buck remakes that are done now.
Wessmith, Michael Rennie also had a couple of other well-known genre appearances. He was the villian the Sandman in episodes of the Adam West Batman series. And in the one I remember fondly he played the Keeper on the 60's Lost in Space show. He was an alien collector of different species from around the universe with a huge menagerie aboard his ship. He wanted to add young Will Robinson and his sister Penny to his collection and would control them by the mesmerizing power of his cosmic staff. Seeing those old B&W episodes as a kid, Rennie was as spooky and awe-inspring as he was as Klaatu to me.

Mmm... Connelly... Though I did like her better before she became anorexic.

" I saw my baby trying as hard as babes could try, what could I do?".....I say bring on Connelly, I have loved her ever since Labyrinth.....I have never actually seen the original, that's why I am all for updates....I tend not to like a lot of movies made before 1980,,,yes, I know it is stupid, but that's just me... i have been turned onto some classics, like Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Kelly's Heros and such, but I think remakes are a good way to bring older stories to a new audience. I think that some classics are way overblown, like Citizen Kane or Gone With the Wind.,,,,I sat through those and god, they were awful.

Not sure about Earth Standing Still, but my heart does when I look at that picture.

Whiskeymovie I agree with you completely. Most movies made pre-1980 just don't hold-up. Not to mention that with all the media now not many make the time to see an old black and white movie. So, yes remakes that fall in this category I have no problems with.

Personally...I always pictured James Caviezel in the role of Klaatu if this ever got remade.
