Two More Join MECHANIC

Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland Join Mechanic Remake.

By Jarrod Sarafin     October 15, 2009
Source: Variety

Jason Statham has an apprentice and his father hopping on board The Mechanic, a remake of Charles Bronson's 1972 hitman flick. Variety reports that Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland are joining the ranks to star opposite Jason. Simon West  is set to direct the production which should begin shooting in a few weeks in New Orleans.

Plot Concept: Based on the 1972 Charles Bronson action classic, Foster will play Steve McKenna, the young man who becomes an apprentice to an aging hitman played by Jason Statham. Sutherland will play the role of Foster's father and Statham's handler.

No distributor has grabbed the property so there's no release date as of yet.

Sweet.  Ben Foster is an excellent actor and Statham can be. Let's just hope his role in this movie and this movie as a whole is more Snatch and The Bank Job and less Crank and Transporter.  I hate those movies and don't know why Statham does them.  They are the stupidest movies ever and I can barely tell them apart from each other that's including the sequels and the seperate series themselves.

Another remake?

There's an article for you....why hollywood does remakes.  Besides maybe being cheaper or is it?

Loved the original with Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent. Watched it as a kid on TV allot and I can see where a remake is due because the film has strong themes that were marginalized originally. Yea we have seen the movie in different films over the years but going directly to source with this might make for a better than the original movie. To bad Bronson couldn’t be in it.

The original was solid.  This should be good as well.  I like Statham movies and the supporting cast is shaping up nicely.

I loved the twist at the ending of the orignal movie. And the part  where the girl slashed her wrists. And Vincent's character was willing to let her bleed out was chilling.  Foster play's twisted, psychotic little motherfrackers really well. Like he did in 3:10 to Yuma.

This movie was great, but I am OK with this particular remake.  I just hope there is no jumping cars from rooftop to rooftop or any other Transport/Crank BS action.  Don't get me wrong, I like those franchises for what they are.  It is just that this is a Bronson classic and well, Bronson rules (even post-life).  It could really be an excellent film again.

I like Foster playing some blood thirsty hitman. Like dragon said the guy plays twisted really well, Alpha Dog, Hostage and even 30 Days of Night are other good examples

As for Statham? I like him, but

Anyway I remember the original in title only, not any details so it'll almost feel like new to me

Never saw the original, but it was supposed to be pretty good.  I like how the cast is shaping up here.
