Two Sci-fi Trilogies in the Works for Cameron

Date: Thursday, July 06, 2006
Source: MTV.com

James Cameron recently told MTV that he working on two would-be sci-fi trilogies.

The director reported, "I have two franchises, if you will, or films that play out over an arc of a number of films that I am going to be making." He also noted he would not make the back-to-back but rather one after the other. If they do well then he'd look at back-to-back sequels.

The first film would most likely be AVATAR (aka PROJECT 880) -- a love story. The other project would be BATTLE ANGEL -- a sci-fi thriller about a female cyborg in the 26th century.

ANGEL will be based on the graphic novels by by a Japanese artist Yukito Kishiro.

Someone's gotten a little ambitious.

I think someone must have tinkered with the oxygen mix on his submarine.
I read that WETA has been chosen as the SFX house for Avatar. Fingers crossed.

I'm personally getting tired of hearing about the projects Cameron is "about to work on," only to have another year go by with nothing but another IMAX featurette. I had to double-check on IMDB, but Titanic really was the last major motion picture this guy directed. He's produced a TV show and done four IMAX films. I won't deny he's kept busy, I just personally wish it was on some of the projects that have been in "pre-development" for ages.

How do other people feel about the IMAX movies? Are they truly as satisfying as a full-length theatrical release?

I agree with parallax; Cameron's been talking about these projects for a couple of years now; kind of like Lucas/Spielberg/Ford with Indy IV. Just shut up about it all and make the damn movies. I know Cameron's been refining effects and camera quality in recent years, but enough is enough; make a movie!

If I made blockbuster after blockbuster, and finally making the largest grossing film of all time, I like to think I'd take some time off to do whatever the H*** I want to do!

I miss Cameron (especially after T3), but I'll happily wait until his blockbuster return.

I'm not sure if Cameron is so much ambitious as he is bored.

IMAX movies are great - if you get the right movie. Unfortunately, as most of them are (at least superficially) academic or educational in nature, its as hit and miss as watching docs on the discovery channel.
I've always been surprised that no major hollywood studio has ever tried to release a big event tent-pole movie exclusively in imax BEFORE releasing it into the theatres. The sheer spectacle of imax movies, along with the limited number of theaters, might actually make the movies an event to see. So called "summer event pictures" really don't work anymore. The market is saturated with different movies, as well as endless prints of each individual movie.
I remember seeing people (and/or being) turned away in disappointment due to sold out shows for Raider of the Lost Ark, Return of the Jedi, and Ghostbusters. Now, if you miss the 7:00 show (which is at only ever at a maximum 75% capacity anyway), you can always get tickts for the 7:05, 7:10, 7:11, etc; shows.
I know that nobody wants to miss the movie, but the fact that you had to practically fight to get in to see the movie made seeing it such a pleasure, and memorable event.

Getting back to the topic at hand: I'll be glad when Cameron gets back to making movies, and am also glad to see that he's thinking sci-fi rather than the proposed movie about a real life cliff diving couple (yawn).

Please start to make some movies. It seems like all he does is talk about them. Get going!!!

WETA? I'm still waiting to see how well they do with the Evangelion movie (whenever anything actually happens with it).

I'll believe it when I see it. Cameron needs to learn how to pull the f-ing trigger...
