YAHOO! Entertainment News reports that THE TWO TOWERS, largely excluded from consideration for technical awards in this year's Oscar race, got some well-deserved recognition from the Visual Effects Society this past Wednesday night as effects professionals held their first-ever awards ceremony.

The film was nominated in nine categories and won the awards in all but one, matte painting, which was won by STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES. ABC's cancelled DINOTOPIA led the winners for television productions with four awards.

The Tolkien adaptation won for compositing and visual effects in an effects-driven motion picture, performance by an actor in an effects film, special effects, effects art direction, visual effects photography, models and miniatures, and character animation in a live-action motion picture.
