Twohy Updates on RIDDICK Sequel

It seems that great DVD sales for CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK may have saved the character for another installment. Chronicles/Pitch Black director David Twohy has updated his official site saying the sales have attracted the attention of potential financiers. The sequel would be produced and distributed independently and not with Universal Pictures, says Twohy. Also, it would have a smaller budget like Pitch Black. Here's what the director had to say on his official website;

Okay, okay, now on to the really important stuff like "What the f**k is happening with RIDDICK?" Yes, I get your emails demanding another movie; yes, I keep bumping into you guys in airports and at conventions and I take your pleas to heart. All I can say now is "We're talking about it." The DVD numbers were really good – we know that, and some potential financiers know that.

But if another movie surfaces, it probably won't be a Universal movie and probably will be an independent movie. Which means we'll have to make it for substantially less than the last installment. But that's okay. PITCH BLACK was $22 million all in. Maybe it's time to go back to our roots – as we go on to The UnderVerse.

I liked both Pitch black and Chronicals, the character of Riddick is pretty cool, I could handle a sequel.

I have a great idea for a real Pitch Black sequel that would kick some serious ass. BTW...the ending of Riddick was a great ironic twist ending--the problem however is that the rest of the film failed to have that same flare. The Dark Fury animated movie was actually better than Riddick by leaps and bounds...and felt more like the dark version of Star Wars that we were promised with Chronicles. But, I'll tell you...I'd sure like to pitch my version of a Riddick sequel...although it's written in note form right now, as a scriptment outline...it sure kicks ass. That, and I have a kick ass idea for Fast And The Furious that places it as a true high concept summer event block buster film, unlike the previous films, however, I don't wish to write either script.

Writing scripts can be fun, but it sure is a headache...and I'd rather play the muse and get story and creator credits instead.

I really liked both of the previous movies!
Bring on the next chapter!!!!!!!

I also love Riddick stuff. Smaller budgets make movies work harder sometimes. A tv series would be great for Vin's so called career and I think would work aimed at adults on HBO or other pay networks to get hardcore.

This is fantastic news. I didn't think it would happen. I'm absolutly loved the expanded universe created in Chronicles. I liked it better than pitch black. So i would be a touch concered with the budget cut. But i would be there opening weekend regardless.

I agree with you guys. I would love to explore the under-verse. But if they go with $22 mil budget it's going to be a tough sell, that alone is going to be close to Diesel's fee. Then againn he should agree to a pay cut considering the direction his career seems to be heading.

I liked both Pitch Black and Chronicles but have trouble reconciling the two together.
Pitch Black was a realistic, gritty story of ill-fated shipmates in a bad situation that could take place 100 or 200 years from now. One of whom happened to be a baddass fellow who learned some things about himself in the events. Chronicles was the telling of a mythic character and his mighty exploits that touched on legend. It took place either 1000 years from now or "once upon a time." He and the story were bigger than life in the vein of Conan or 300. The stuff of things told around campfires. The stories were both good but I still can't conceive of them happening in the same universe.
A sequel could be cool although the way Riddick ended it felt nice to leave it up in the air.

This is not a "knock" on anyone.
I love the first movie. "CHRONICLES" was horrible! How the hell do you turn a molester and murderer into a hero?! Last of the furyans?!...WTF?! Give me a break. The only good thing Riddick can do is die. There is a reason why the third MOVIE installment didn't fly...enough people don't care to see it.

Sure he's a murderer, but a molester? I must've missed that, or he was overstating his own image for the sake of intimidation, regardless both movies are great for what they are. And while you may not have enjoyed the movie, the DVD sales speak for themselves, most sci fi fans enjoyed them both to one degree or another. Critical reviews don't mean crap as many good movies have been unfairly panned. Also Starbreeze studios is hard at work on reworking the video game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay, by adding huge graphical enhancements and new gameplay and story elements for the XBOX 360 and renaming it The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The original game was amazing, and there's a lot of potential for the character and franchise, so just because the second wasn't as good as the first doesn't mean the franchise is dead and buried.

I loved both movies for different reasons. The one thing that pretty much stayed the same was the Riddick character despite the two different sci-fi type genres and film ratings. My only suggestion is keep Riddick true to character, and make the next movie "R" rated. Riddick is meant to be hardcore, and he should stay that way.

Btw, the uncut unrated version of Chronicles was a much better film than the dumbed down "PG-13" version.
