Tyler Bates Faces THE DEVIL'S REJECTS

By: Randall Larson
Date: Tuesday, July 26, 2005

Cinescape soundtrack columnist Randall Larson's interview with Tyler Bates on his score for Rod Zombie's THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, has been posted at the iF Magazine web site. Bates, who started out a few years ago scoring such low-budget sci-fi thrillers as PSYCHO COP 2, TEENAGE T-REX, and ALIEN AVENGERS, scored a hit with Zach Snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD remake. His latest effort is the ferocious and eclectic score for rocker Rod Zombie's quasi-sequel to HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES.

"We both agreed that the film at times would need a massive sound, but [Rod] did not want it to resemble anything conventional or anything orchestral," Bates describes his initial approach to THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. "Then we both agreed it had to be primal, because the film has a very grainy look to it. It looks beautiful, but it's not a slick Hollywood film. So it would require a little handiwork as far as creating some dirty sounds. I wanted it to feel like you were underneath a car muffler, because you feel so dirty when you watch the film, because of the visuals. I wanted the music to reflect some of that."
