They put Perry into this movie for one reason and one reason only, to boost the box office...as his films tend to draw between 23 million and 33 million dollars in the opening weekends...and tend to hold up well for weeks after the initial release dates.

Now...speaking of boosting box office, as I have said frequently on this site, William Shatner's increased and newly diverse popularity thanks to Boston Legal would attract alot of non-Trekers and Trekies to theatres much like the Tyler Perry effect may play in the studio's marketing strategies. If I was an exec at Paramount, I would certainly put Shatner in this movie in order to make sure I had all positive aspects of creating higher box office fully covered in terms of insuring this film's success.

One missed opportunity...and this film could easily flop!!!

Flop?! You gotta really work, and be a real f#&k up, to make this a flop. Execution, execution, execution! Look me up. I said they should go this route a long time ago. Nervous? Let me do it. This can be successful!

I think calling this casting an attempt to boost box office absurd for several reasons.

1. Perry has a small role in the film, and from reading the spoiler description he appears in only one or two scenes. If his role was a significant role in the film the argument MIGHT have some weight to it, but Perry's fans aren't about to plunk down the price of a ticket just to see him in one or two scenes in the film. This leads me to my second point...

2. Let's be honest here. Most of Perry's fan base is hardly what you would imagine to be fans of Star Trek, and Paramount isn't going to market the film to push his role in it. Again, if his role was a large part in the film Paramount MIGHT try to push that angle, but he's already finishing filming his scenes!

metalwater, your "stunt casting" theory is horse mullarkey. The financial risk aspect of your ideas may have some weight, but your reasoning is nuts.

Metal, I just can't see Boston Legal fans or people that use Priceline going to see Star Trek just because Shatner may have a cameo or a small role. I myself don't want Shatner in it. I think he brings a certain amount of goofyness that I would rather they did without and not to mention that he died already (I know, time travel). If this is a new direction for the franchise let's clean the slate a bit.
As for the b.o. it isn't like this series has set any records lately. I know some have done well, but none has reached the expectations set for them. Which is why I'm down with them sort of re-booting the whole thing. And I can live with Spock being the exception and the one that ties or links everything together.

It's a cast of 1000's!!
Got to agree that if this is stunt casting it's fairly pointless - meaning this ain't stunt casting.
I may have expressed a reservation or two about this flick. Much as I like the casting I'm too much of a continuity nut and the rumors I've heard lead me to believe continuity is being chucked for convenience with this. I'll be there but if my suspicions are true it will be the last time I'm there.
Mark my words, The Shat will be in this film. Double Secret Stunt Casting! Don't be fooled.

The thing about Trek films to date is that every one of them has been done on a budget budget, they've never really been blockbusters (save perhaps TMP), and they've always been profitable.

Will this one be a flop? I don't know. But adding Tyler Perry isn't going to make or break this film.

I think it is the other way around. Perry is cashing a paycheck that he will use to produce his own films. Like many independent filmmakers, he will have difficulty finding financing for his movies regardless of how well his movies do at the box office. If he makes a glorified cameo in a studio movie, he can a lot of money in a short period of time.

The man made over a hundred million from his plays. Hollywood came to HIM, just like Master P ("I GOT THE HOOK-UP"). I think he sold approx. 80,000 units "out the trunk of his car". "H" wanted some of that potential box office.

FUN FACT: He financed his own show "TYLER PERRY'S HOUSE OF PAYNE".

Perry could just be a fan of Star Trek and wanted a small part just so he could say he was in the film, like Christian Slater in Star Trek VI. I don't care who is cast in all of the supporting roles; the only roles that are going to matter are the leads.

AMEN, Wessmith 1966! I would like to hit on Lt. Uhura, or any of those short skirt wearing females, myself.
