Uhura Cast & Plot for Abrams' STAR TREK?

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Friday, August 31, 2007
Source: TrekMovie.com & AICN

Two different sites are reporting possible news on STAR TREK XI (or just STAR TREK depending on how you look at it.)..TrekMovie.com is reporting that actress Zoe Saldana (Haven, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) has been offered the role of original Enterprise communications officer Lt. Uhura by JJ Abrams and co-producer Bryan Burk. This bit of news would fit since she's worked with both producers before on the show Six Degrees which they both manage. There is one conflict with this happening though, readers. The actress is committed to James Cameron's AVATAR which begins filming in October and this would come into conflict with any role in this next Trek adventure which begins filming in November. Still, one doesn't know how large a role she would play in the Trek movie so the scheduling snag may not mean anything at all.

Meanwhile, over at AICN, they have what they are claiming to be a look at what the plot will center on. Obviously, this may not end up being true but I'll go ahead and warn plot details below for those who don't want to know anything about it other then casting news. Alright, you have been warned and now it's time to report what AICN is saying...

Here's the plot summary/concept according to them:

A group of Romulans will reportedly go back in time to kill off James T. Kirk, and the elder Spock (to once again be played by Leonard Nimoy) must do what he can to prevent that incident and change the timelines back.

AICN is also saying... "The plan is to use this second timeline as a way of rebooting without erasing or ignoring canon. These new voyages of the Enterprise, they're taking place in whatever timeline starts with this story. ... It's basically the same solution Marvel Comics has in terms of publishing, the way they use their Ultimates line to reboot continuity."

The next STAR TREK movie hits theaters everywhere on December 25, 2008.

Big thanks to Mania scooper, Almost Unbiased, for passing this bit along...

Ok... Sure... Why not? The time travel motif seems to work well in the Star Trek universe, but it does seem to get used an awful lot. Here's to hoping that Abrams can make this seem fresh and exciting.

Great we FINALLY get rid of Berman and Branna who drove the franchise into the ground in part due to their reliance on the "Time twisty Crutch", only to have it resurected....might as well bring back the idiots if this is the "secret plot" to revive Star Trek.

Just as I suspected. The Enterprise is caught in a temporal causality loop yet again.

I suggest we decompress the Main Shuttle Bay to push the Enterprise out of the way of the errant Romulans.

I'm also disappointed the casting hasn't gone as I had hoped...

I have to be honest, I'm most likely going to see the movie out of curiosity, but I am soooooooo far beyond caring anymore. MAYBE this could be really good, but to go this time travel/new timeline route just seems like a shitty way of throwing out all the cool Next Generation stuff. I know not everybody was a big fan of all the series, but I would think that Next Generation at least held it's own enough to not be thrown away so casually.

I agree that the time travel plot seems overdone when it comes to the trek franchise.

Zoe Saldana is a fine choice, but she doesn't have a thing on Nichelle Nichols as the original Uhura though.

Also thanks for the great link ElvisGump!

The more I read about this, the more I get confused.

If this is going to kick off all new "Voyages of the Starship Enterprise," I guess I don't understand what's so important about naming the Captain "Kirk" and the Vulcan "Spock." In fact, it almost seems like it would be more of a detriment since everyone will be making direct comparisons to Shatner and Nimoy. If you're dieing for a series/movie set in the time period of TOS... then just do it with a new crew.

Or this could turn out to be fantastic... who knows.

Zoe will make an excellent Uhura; good choice. She's cute as hell and a pretty decent actress too.

I'm tired of the time travel storylines, but it solves a lot of problems for them. I'm still excited to see this revamp of the series though.

If this is true at least this is not a complete reboot. It also moves away from what originally looked like Star Trek:90210.

Not digging the plotline at all, if it's true of which I have serious doubts. The plot sounds like a wholesale ripoff of the Terminator films plot. If they go ahead with this plot the film will be a train wreck, an obscene waste of money, and damaging to the careers of all involved.

This is the reason George Lucas said he will never allow "Time Travel" to be used in any Star Wars stories. He says it makes for a less dramatic and "easy" way to "save" the characters in a given situation. I agree. Star Trek has used the "Time Travel" pitch way way way too often. You'd think, after so many jaunts back and forth in time, something would have been messed up, or have discontinuity, but it all seems to snap back together without issues, for the most part. "First Contact" was a good example of doing it right, but again, time travel is over-used in Trek. This plot, if it stays on track, will be terrible! And silly. Looks like we have another "Nemesis"(which I felt was the absolute WORST of the Trek films, with the exception of "Final Frontier"), and it will only solidify the notion that Star Trek has over-stayed it's welcome. The best thing they could do is NOT do this movie, and don't even THINK about making ANOTHER TV spinoff. Star Trek's films should have stopped at "First Contact". Now THAT was an excellent Trek film, the best of TNG cast and probably as good as "Wrath of Kahn", if not better, IMO.
