While promoting the upcoming supernatural horror tale The Devil--the first part of M. Night Shyamalan's "Night Chronicles"---the producer revealed to MTV that the third installment will actually be a story originally planned to be Unbreakable 2.

"I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to 'Unbreakable' for one of the 'Night Chronicles,'" revealed Shyamalan. "It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for 'Unbreakable,' and it was too much. There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.'"

Check out the full video interview down below.

Devil will hit theaters September 17, 2010. The second part of the Chronicles will be another thriller titled Twelve Strangers.

Why is this guy still allowed to make movies?

NotAFan 9/3/2010 4:58:12 AM

I always wished he had made the sequel for Unbreakable! It's cool to hate on M. Night now but I thought Unbreakable was a really cool movie! I just hopes he still has a superhero in the film or it will just be another generic supernatural killer movie!

damnit! I wanted Unbreakable 2! And so did Willis and Jackson by all appearances...

Unbreakable is my favorite M. Night film.  I love it.  I really hope he still does a sequel.  Is he saying that there were too many villains in his original idea for Unbreakable 2 so he took one out to use in this Night Chronicles movie?  So is there still an Unbreakable 2 script with just less villains?  That's probably better for it anyways.  We know what happens when there are too many vilains ala Spiderman 3.

Despite the major ending flaw of Unbreakable I would have still prefered a sequel to that instead of this Devil thing.

Wiseguy 9/3/2010 8:08:18 AM

He said "So now I need to come up with a new idea" which it seems he meant for Unbreakable 2 since he's using the original sequel idea for N.C. So it seems like he's still up for a sequel and for one agree with the previous comments that Unbreakable is probably my fave Night movie and would love a second part

The biggest surprise of that interview is that MNS likes The Village as one of his own favorite 2 films. Unbreakable is a no brainer but The Village and The Happening are his 2 worst IMO and the only 2 of his that I outright hate

It's like he's a drug and we're all addicts. We're just trying to get back to that first-time cherry high that was Sixth Sense...

The only film of Night's I'm not too fussed on is Lady in the Water, and even it has some good moments not to mention a terrific score, though I haven't seen Airbender.  I use Unbreakable and The Village with my Grade 10 English students when we study hero and villain characters and they love both films, particularly the Village.  So I think there is a good chance that his films will find new life with later generations who discover them without all the attached hatred of Night.  I for one hope that he continues making films.  I'd rather see a film that attempts to inject some intelligence into the plot rather than a vacuous popcorn blockbuster (i.e. Revenge of the Fallen) any day.

Prefer Unbreakable to all MNS films, however, I become more and more doubtful if we shall ever see a sequel.

Wise... while I don't hate the Village and the Happening, I agree that those 2 are clearly the worst (and just not good films). Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Shymalan was simply taunting the audience, with that statement. Whatever the case, I suspect that this new Night Chronicles trilogy has been designed to keep overhead low and generate maximum profits for the now-producer Shymalan. Using his "brand" to promote these productions is smart business, though I don't know if it's entirely honest (half the people out there seem to think he's the auteur of these movies).

Hobbs... I agree with the flawed ending of Unbreakable. I absolutely dug that film, but didn't like the campiness of the ending, or the way Shyamalan allowed it to be promoted as if it were a mystery. Lik you and Notafan, I would've preferred a sequel to Unbreakable over these other projects (so far, I've passed on Airbender), but I recognize his business "logic," here.
