Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment have hired "The Shield" writer John Hlavin to flesh out the script for a fourth installment in the Underworld franchise. And it won't be a prequel, reports HR's Heat Vision blog. Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the vampire-vs.-werewolf saga, is producing with Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright of Lakeshore.

Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the first two movies, has not cut a deal to return to the series; the third pic, a prequel, starred Rhona Mitra, who also has no deal. The fourth film does not have a director attached.

While the plot is being kept under wraps, Hlavin says "but I can tell you it's not a prequel." He added, "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements."

If you want a fresh element to it then don't make one. There is no way that the producers are going to stray too far from the elements they have in the series and these are the same people that ruined “Resident Evil” as a potentially bad-ass zombie series, so there is little hope of fresh.

I just had no interest past the first one… hell I lost interest about 30 minutes into the first one I just stayed because I was waiting for my class to start, I paid for the ticket and Michael Sheen was doing a good job of being a bad ass I thought.

I honestly just want this Vampire (with or without Werewolves) kick to get over with maybe in a few years see it come back… but it is in overload now. I do enjoy “True Blood” for some reason and I am kind of curious about the flick with Ethan Hawke in it,  but everything else seems to be just bland in the genre… and this whole Twilight thing is not helping (sad sorry sons of bitches who are into that or have to go cause of their partners).

Have been a big fan of the franchise and thoroughly enjoyed Rise of the Lycans.  It'd be awesome to see Kate Beckinsale return but if done right I can see the series moving on without her.  No matter what the case is I'll be sure to turn out to watch it

Awesome.  I cannot wait for this to finally come out.  The first three all have not disapointed me in the slightest.  I'm even more excited that it won't be a prequel.  As much as I loved the third installment to Underworld I was disapointed that it didn't actually progress the story anymore than the second.

Yet again they talk about Rhona Mitra possibly being offered to reprise her role from Rise of the Lycans. They'd film all new flashback scenes just for this? Not that I am complaining, but how much can a deceased character be featured in a sequel? Victor only had a couple key scenes in Evolution. Unless they decide to resurrect the character, which I would like very much as I felt Rhona fit in well in Underworld.

And myklspader, I do agree with you about the vampire genre being overloaded. Especially in the case of Twilight. There is nothing impressive about that series. I guess it shows how easily people are entertained these days.

Underworld is my rare exception in this case, as I do find the story interesting.

I'm not sure how they can continue the story unless they bring in a as-yet-unmentioned new baddie. Obviously, it'll deal with the new hybrid species. Maybe it'll be set farther in the future where Rhona Mitra plays not the same character but the daughter of Beckinsale and Speedman and just happens to look the same..My interest is piqued whatever they do...

I enjoy these for what they are.

gutsmgee 11/20/2009 2:08:29 PM

I don't enjoy these for what they are. (Although any man who doesn't think Beckinsale is hot in black vinyl is just deluding himself.)

I don't think that keeping this series going is futile.  White Wolf has made a similar setting work in the World of Darkness for years.

a hybrid of the vampires and the lycans(Or Vycan s I like to call them) would make for a good third faction.
