Profit. Profit. Profit. That’s a keyword for any Hollywood release but Sony’s genre label Screen Gems puts that focus on an entirely new level. They produce genre movies for relatively low budget value---(see the Resident Evil and Underworld franchises---and somehow manage to keep their profit levels high. With their latest release, Underworld Awakening, clocking in around a $70 million price tag via a co-production with Lakeshore Entertainment, they went above their usual watermark but they still scored a victory over their first weekend of release.
The fourth installment of the Underworld franchise toppled this weekend’s box office by scoring $25.4 million on 3,078 venues across the nation. That makes for a respectable average of $8,252 per showing across the states. Add on the extra $13.4 million the film shot up from its first foreign markets and you have a global gross of $38.8 million after three days of release. Not bad. Not bad at all for Sony’s Screen Gems.
"Kate in the of Selene is just a force to be reckoned with," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer said. "This film may be the best received of the franchise."
Landing in the 2nd place spot is 20th Century Fox’s release of Red Tails. The final major release from executive producer George Lucas (see his “retirement notice” here) flew into the runner-up position by nabbing an estimated $19.1 million in ticket sales over its first weekend. Released on only 2,512 screens across the nation, the release averaged $7,604 per showing and found almost a quarter of its $58 million budget after only its first three days of release. While most Hollywood distributors passed on its all-black cast, 20th Century Fox found some positives in backing up their friendship with Lucasfilm.
"The weekend was up 31 percent and the primary reason is this original true tale of heroism and valor. It's a true American story," said Chris Aronson, Fox's executive vice president of domestic distribution.
The 3rd place spot goes to last weekend’s victor, Contraband. Universal Pictures’ action-thriller found another $12.2 million in its sophomoric frame, almost doubling its budget. The latest numbers has its domestic cume at $46.1 million, set against a production price tag of only $25 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures chose to expand Extremely Loud & Incredible Close into 2,624 more venues this weekend so they enjoy the 4th place spot as a result. Jumping up from their previous 36th place, the Tom Hanks-Sandra Bullock drama tallied up another $10.5 million in receipt sales over its fifth frame (and first frame of wide release). It now has $11.2 million in sales after 29 days at the box office…most of which have been limited.
And the 5th place goes to this weekend’s other wide release. Relativity Media revealed Haywire into 2,439 theaters over the weekend and the action tale somehow found $9.0 million as a result. That balances out to an average of $3,690 per showing and it’s also rather impressive given the meager $23 million price tag that director Steven Soderbergh kept in check for the indie distributor.
With the top releases representing a 30 percent up swing from last year’s numbers, check out the rest of the top 10 down below.

Glad to see Red Tails trailing behind Underworld

samson 1/22/2012 11:04:34 PM

Had Red Tails been in as many theaters as Underworld, it could've been number 1. Not too mention, 59% of Underworld's numbers were from 3D and IMAX. Had those been regualr theaters, Underworld's may not have been number 1.

On the other hand, Red Tails didn't have Kate Beckinsale running arround in tight leather either. So, there's that.

I found Underworld Awakenings to be very boring. For me it felt like the movie was made just so we could see Kate in the Selene outfit again. And yes, she looks as sexy as ever and had a lot of good poses  in the film. But, the movie did nothing for me at all. The ending felt like a Resident Evil movie to me. I wasn't really disappointed because I wasn't expecting much. It was a forgettable movie but an ok way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon before the football games started.

I saw Haywire too and really liked it. Gina Carano was good in her first role. There's something so incredibly sexy to me about a tall, strong, beautiful woman who could probably kick the crap out of me. The fight scenes were excellent and there was no shaky cam crap. You saw the whole fight. Too often the shaky cam and quick cut crap is done because the fight scene is weak, or the actors can't make it believable. In this movie the scenes were strengths. The fights in this movie were realistic, which I like. After a fight Gina would have to apply makeup to hide bruises. Is Gina a great actress? No, but she handled her role well, and after seeing this movie I want to see Gina as Wonder Woman. She has the height, the beauty, the body, the voice and that mix of power and sexuality that WW hs to have. Gina could definitely play WW. She looked amazing dressed up in the movie and she definitely makes a pair of jeans look real good!

I like Soderberg movies because he doesn't feel the need to dot all of the "I"s or cross all of the "T"s. He accepts that the audience is smart enough to figure a few things out for themselves, but he still bridges scenes enough that idiot audience members don't get lost.

Watched the muppets ... it was great but some of the "wink wink" jokes got a bit repetitive 3.5/5

It was a mistake to schedule Haywire against Underworld.   They have too many similarities.    And while Haywire may be the better written movie, it just couldn't compete with Underworld fanbase and brand recognition.  ( This is the 4th Underworld movie )

Was there a Box Office Report last Monday which I somehow missed or was it MIA?  Most of the other regular columns have a place on one of the pages where you can always find them.  I wish the Box Office Report  That spot on the Movie page devoted to interviews has had the same story showing for months.  And the previous interview column had been there for like a year.  Why not put the weekly Box Office Report there instead?

I saw the Muppets too and it brought back so many memories from childhood.  Great movie.  I loved all of the pictures of former guests on The Muppet Show on the walls of Kermit's office and in the theater.  I think they could bring the show back without having to change the format too much.  I think it would attract young viewers who want to see Selena Gomez or Justin Bieber sing a duet with Miss Piggy.  And it would probably bring back fans of the original series who want some familar nostalgia for an hour a week.

I will probably wait for Netlfix for most of the movies on the list unless I'm convinced to drag my butt out of the house next weekend.

Saw 2 movies this weekend.

I saw Red Tails in a packed theater. It was enjoyable but not great or above average. It told the story of this particular fictionalized group of Tuskegee airman in a straight forward fashion with the group consisting of the 40's style WWII movie cliches: hotheads, jokesters, the troubled pilot, the lover, the naive young newcomer.  It went through their stories in the standard expected way but noticeably added on the prejudice from all sides the pilots received because of their ethnic background. The Pentagon wanted them to fail, white pilots had no confidence in them, and the enemy believed they'd be pushovers. The Red Tails wanted to be heroes but moreso show they could be as good or better than others. It definietly was crowd pleasing. The ILM FX were naturally fantastic. I honestly couldn't tell when or if they used real planes or FX and it had the look of documentary war footage. I know nothing about the director Anthony Hemingway but it had the straightforward directing style you would expect if George Lucas guided his hand.

Also saw Haywire which was excellent. Soderbergh's style is very close to alot of 70's directors and this film strongly reminded me of a film called The Killer Elite. Not the recent Jason Statham starrer but a 70's film starring James Caan and Robert Duvall which was about private security contractors for the CIA and the double dealing and ensuing action that came about. The plot for this one had similarities. Gina Carano is perfect for the style of this movies. She doesn't give long speeches which I don't think she can handle yet but she has a prescence on camera with a tomboyish feel even in a dress and you finally feel like you are looking at a woman who really can kick ass and take names instead of a skinny actress with a litle training. Soderbergh's style lets the story tell itself almost from a distance and as Wessmith said he doesn't hit you over the head with every plot point.

Kara,  I think the Box office report last week popped up a day or 2 late due to the MLK holiday.

Can't wait until March when Hollywood starts releasing more movies that will get me into the theater.  I want to see Descendants which is finally coming out over here next weekend.  Other than that, I haven't seen much come out lately that I'm interested in.

Wes I thought the same thing about Gina C being Wonder Woman and maybe because they made a comment about her being Wonder Woman or something... which light bulb in my head went off and said... OMG yes! So maybe that was an intentional Subconsious message or something, but she would be soooo perfect. I loved it for all the same reasons. Especailly when she beat the crap out of Channing Tatum.  LOL
