United Artists greenlights Bryan Singer thriller

By: Karl Schneider

According to Variety, United Artists Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner have given the green light to their second film, a yet untitled Bryan Singer thriller.

The film, set in WWII, is similar to Suspects in that it is a multi-character ensemble piece.  The move will also delay any possibility of a Superman Returns sequel in the near future as Singer will make this his next film.

Production gets underway this summer.

KJ's Take:  Aside from the fact that it pushes a Superman sequel back, which I don't like, it sounds fine.

Singer's never made a bad movie, so I look forward to this, BUT I really wish he'd make 'Man of Steel' first, THEN do this one.

oh no, i get the horrible feeling that warner will not wait for singer to do the superman sequel... maybe ratner will finally get his wish and take on supes

I wasn't thrilled with Superman Returns as it felt a bit like "Return to Neverland" from Disney Studios. "If you enjoyed this last time, you'll enjoy it this time, let's take you on a tour of everything you've missed these X ammount of years. Look, there's the mermaids waving at us, there's Captain Hook, there's..." ugh.

Anyway, I'm hoping "Man of Steel" captures more of my interest. I did like Routh as Clark Kent and would like to see him reprise the role (and this time actually "fight").

But this WW2 project sounds pretty cool. I'm game for it.

Basically this means, that Warner Bros. is not showing much faith in singer (smart move) and he "moving on" to another project.

AWESOME. Hopefully someone who knows Superman will make a fantastic sequel as SR was a craptastic movie.

Superman returns wasn't horrible.... it just wasn't what I wanted... I wanted a fresh take on Supes, not a rehash of Superman with wacky plot twists like Superbabies and new boyfriends for Lois...... This debate will rage on forever.... This new film sounds interesting however.

I know I'm going to get hammered for this, but I want Michael Bay to make the next Superman movie. He's great with special effects and has an eye for iconic imagery. I think he would deliver an entertaining Superman movie, not just an homage (retread) to previous Superman films.

Singer's a great director, but I think he was way too self indulgent in making Superman Returns. I think Bay gives audiences what they want. If Transformers is a hit, maybe Bay will get a shot. I just don't think Singer will bring anything new to the Superman table.

Did anyone else miss the part in the article that stated, Singer wasn't doing the Man of Steel and the WB were going with someone else?
Oh, so it was just theCollector then?

And darthcaifan, don`t even joke like that dude! I can just see Ratner drooling and rubbing his hands together in that oh so evil way thinking about how his mission to ruin every comic book adaptation movie is coming to fruition.Ratner: " I started with X3, now Superman. Soon, they`ll be nothing left to watch but my Rush Hour sequels!"
--cue Dr Evil laugh--

Love the historical pieces; keep 'em coming.
MoS will probably get a new director. I can't see WB being all that willing to wait too long for Singer to free up time.
The real question is, why would Singer want to take this project, if he wasn't being encouraged to do so by Warners?

theCOLLECTOR • Mar 14, 2007, 09:17am •
Captmathman, that is my point exactly. Them telling him ot offering him to do this, which would "push back" MOS is a bit odd. As I stated before, this basically means, that Singer will not longer be directing MOS, which is great. So he is being gently let go and making it look like it is his choice.

Honestly, I am interested in this period movie. Singer does great with peices like this.

I hope Warners will wait on Singer. Even though I had some problems with Supe Returns, I'd rather he be in charge of the next rather than anyone else. Nolan did The Prestige before starting the Dark Knight.
