Despite the fact that parent company MGM wants no part of it, United Artists has inked an interim deal with the WGA in much the same way that David Letterman did last week through his company Worldwide Pants. Variety reports that this deal allows striking feature writers to begin work for the studio and it certainly opens the door for other indie companies like The Weinstein Company and Lionsgate, even if the big boys who make up AMPTP (like MGM) will continue with their own plans at the strike bargaining table.

lol Yay you indeed.

And AMPTP better watch themselves here. There is no question that Letterman opened the floodgates..and United Artists just built the boat to travel through them..Other indie branches may be jumping on board quick here.

So strike ends one co at at time? I guess I thought it was all or nothing.

Hey, whatever solution works for the writers so that they get what they are due, is cool with me. Let the big boys continue losing money, all be it not much, because of their greed, stupidty and stubbornness.

Definitely, if enough smaller pro co's cut their own deals with the WGA, it could force the collective into negiotations, or hell at least get their asses back to the bargaining table.

That's the most insane part, the AMPTP isn't even willing to sit down and talk at this point.

Best case scenario - as the smaller studios and independents cut their own deals, we'll see more films being released that were made on smaller budgets with smaller ambitions.
In the long run, this might cause at least a small bump in quality work over tons of money projects.
I can see a silver lining here.
Granted, it's in no way guaranteed or even a necessary outgrowth . . . but it is a possibility.

I guess Tom Cruise had a handle in this.
