Universal announces various release dates

By: Karl Schneider

Universal Pictures has set release dates for the majority of it's big budget 2008 films.

Release Dates announced include:

Babylon A.D. - February 29, 2008
Wanted - March 28, 2008
Indiana Jones 4 - May 22, 2008
The Incredible Hulk - June 13, 2008
The Love Guru - June 20, 2008
The Mummy 3 - July 11, 2008
Mamma Mia - July 18, 2008
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - August 1, 2008
The Wolfman - November 14, 2008

KJ's Take:  Some notes:  The Hulk was moved to avoid Pixar's Wall-E and The Mummy 3 will face off against a Ben Stiller comedy, Tropic Thunder.  Maybe it's just me, but their lineup seems very geared toward sci-fi, fantasy and comic adaptations and doesn't seem THAT strong.  Maybe I am underestimating IJ4 and Mummy 3.

Not to be mean, but you underestimate a lot. I mean, you enjoyed Superman Returns for god sakes.....maybe you should review books? Or Dog Shows? J/P

I am looking forward IJ4 and hellboy2. Mumy 3 should be interesting....who knows. A new hulk? Swet....but I am not excited....I really want Iron Man.

Why is Indiana Jones 4 listed as a Universal release? All the other films were released under Paramount, and I can't believe that Paramount would sell that license to someone else.

Yeah, I'm confused as to why Universal is listing IJ4 as one of its release dates. I had heard that earlier on, waaay back at the beginning of the rumours of a fourth Indiana Jones Movie, Paramount was going to loose the distribution rights to Spielberg's Dreamworks SKG. However, that company was bought out...By Paramount. So why is IJ4 listed with Universal?

And in further developments....I just checked IMDB.com and they still list Paramount as distributor of Indiana Jones 4. Either IMDB is behind the times and Mania got a MAJOR scoop, or Mania's info is off. KJ, may I ask where you got word that Indiana Jones 4 is now based at Universal?

IMDB also lists Univeral Pictures International (UPI) as the distributor of of Indy 4 - along with the upcoming Hulk, Transformers, and Dreamgirls. If one looks at the company credits for Dreamgirls (a Paramount movie), there's a bunch of different UPI and UIP companies, all of which seem to be spin-offs of Universal and handle distribution for countries outside the US. Paramount appears to have distributed Dreamgirls in the US, UK, France and Mexico but it looks like they used Universal's distributors for much of the rest of the world - so maybe they have some sort of contract with Universal's distribution companies.

im looking forward to the avious movies of course. but on a side not hellboy im really looking forward to giving the fact that the last movie del toro did (pans labyrinth) was one of the best movies of last year alone. im gonna be curious what he brings to the plate with this installment.
as for the other movies like wanted and mamma mia, anyone know what those ones are about?

snallygaster • Feb 11, 2007, 02:55pm •
Mamma Mia is based on the stage musical, which in turn is based on songs by ABBA. Yes, really.

Babylon A.D. is based on a novel about a mercenary protecting a woman from a cult. Vin Diesel plays the mercenary.

Wanted is based on a comic book that I'm not familiar with (I've been out of the comic loop for quite awhile). It stars James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman. Maybe somebody else can shed more light...

I can't even find The Love Guru listed in the IMDB. For some reason, the title suggests another vehicle for an SNL cast member, but who knows?

The Love Guru is a Mike Myers comedy. Universal holds part of the distribution rights to IJ4.

This seems so long away.
