Universal Developing Disaster Film SKYSCRAPER

Modern take of Towering Inferno.

There's nothing like borrowing the same ideas as previous disaster formulas but not actually calling it a remake. Mike Sobel's disaster-action pitch Skyscraper has been preemptively bought by Universal Pictures while Neal Moritz is producing via his Original Film shingle. Sobel, a former New York lawyer who moved to Hollywood last year to pursue a writing career, also had his first screenplay taken on by Moritz's OF productions. Original's Tania Landau is executive producing.

Plot Concept: The project is described as a modern-day Towering Inferno, in which a Donald Trump-esque developer sets out to build a mile-high structure in Chicago. When the tower starts to falter, a crew must rescue the city from mayhem.

Given that 9/11 is still fresh in people's minds... this is a bad idea.

You know what, I watched the Twin Towers fall in person, and it was one of the most surreal things I have ever seen, but that was 7 years ago. I love me some great disaster movies and no terrorist is taking that away from me. If we change everything because of that one day, they win, and I say fuck that. I love the Towering Inferno, Airport, Dante's Peak, Volcano, Earthquake, 10.5, and I am totally down with a big action piece set in a building.......brig it on!!

You've got the right attitude Whiskeymovie.  It's funny because a lot people have Iracors thinking but they weren't actually there.  The people I talk to who actually were have the same feeling.  Maybe it's the connection to the event.  I don't want to get into it all.  But we have already had two movies based on the tragedy and this one is a little different so why not.  I like the Towering Inferno and remember the phony flames they used.  Classic!  I'm not sure how they will take a story to this.  My only worry is that this will be like Twister and The Day after Tomorrow, all special effects with no depth.  I've seen to many movies where I walk out of the theatre remembering the visiaul effects of certain scenes but not rememerbing why they characters were involved.

Don't know. I think I have to side with iracors on this one. I don't know if I would personally have a problem with this, since it is just a movie, but I think enough of the moviegoing public has shown that they can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. That, combined with cap's legitimate concern about the f/x over substance might tank this movie pretty bad.
