Well, it's officially dead now. At least in terms of Universal Pictures bringing The Dark Tower to theaters and the small screen. After a few months of trying to work out the finances for their ambitions to bring Stephen King's epic series to both the silver screen (trilogy of films) and the television (by way of a series set between each movie), Deadline reports the studio has officially bowed out of the project. Ron Howard was set to direct the production which was penned out by Akiva Goldsman and Mark Verheiden, with actor Javier Bardem reportedly "locked in" psychologically for the lead role of Roland Deschain. It was set to be released in theaters May 2013.

But no longer.

According to the online trade, Universal bowed out of the project when they couldn't come to terms with the filmmakers on commitments. The studio wanted to greenlight only the first film while Howard and his team of writers wanted deals for the film and the television series being scripted out by Verheiden.

Warner Bros. Pictures---by way of Akiva Goldsman's Weed Road---is reportedly the next studio interested in attempting to bring The Dark Tower to the silver screen.

Thanks to Bryzarro for the submission.

LOL...I can't help but laugh.  Though I will give credit to Howard as it was an ambitious project but also very costly if the movie isn't a hit.

I never made it past the first book as i didn't think it was that good.  I never saw it as a movie type of novel, HBO would be a better place for it in my opinion.

I'm going to start copying my posts cause half the time they don't go through for some reason!  "sigh"  I"m sorry to say this is pretty much what I thought was gonna happen.  The cost of something like this would have had the copper-counters jumping out windows, especially in this economy.  Still, you gotta spend money to make money, guys...

The Dark Tower series is good and very rewarding to a King fan as it ties his whole "universe" together like one of the annual "end of the Marvel universe" events.  I must admit thought, it's out there and if the author hadn't been Stephen King, it never would have gotten published.  I think that the same problem applies to the movie.  Although the movie & TV approach would have been cool and should still be tried with some project or other, I just can't see Dark Tower drawing in the numbers needed to justify such a project, as much as I personally would like to see it.

Here's to Warner Bros. Pictures. Let's see if they come through.

reek: Stephen King was still a fairly new writer when he penned the first Dark Tower novella. I am quite sure that if Philip K. Dick or any other writer had written it it still would have been published.

I am sad but happy to see this is not going through.

The series which I find after reading the first picks up very well.  I loved the characters and the stories were great.  As a stand alone film.....never.

As a serial show done via CGI or even animated.....YES.  But I don't think this will ever get made.

To compare the scope to LOTR isn't fair because Rings has had alot more shelf life that The Dark Tower Series and who knows what number of followers it will have in 30-40 years from now to truly understand the scope it covers.

this is a project that can still be done- what they need to do is snag newcomers to the lead roles who are hungry enough and willing to sign a multi picture deal. Use a combination of live and cgi scenery to shrink the costs. and it can be done.

If a film like lord of the rings was made back to back just like the two hobbit films are going to do then a project like the dark tower can still be done.

I agree with Hobbs I haven't a read a good Stephen King book in years, and that includes the Dark Tower series. Which I tried to read several years ago and honestly the book reads like King was stoned when he was writing it. So I'm glad that this overrated piece of trash won't be going to the big screen anytime soon. King is a total burn out creatively whose best work is well behind him and this is from a formally rabid SK fan from the begining of his career.

Breaks my heart...really.

Redvector, everyone has their own opinion on things and not everyone like Stephen King. Personally he is my favorite author. But I have a question... if you don't like reading Stephen King, why do you keep doing it? Why not find an author you do like and read them instead of needing to bash someone's elses work? There have been many times where I read the back cover, bought the book, read the book, realized I didn't like it and then never read that author again. I don't call their work trash because honestly, someone likes them otherwise they still wouldn't be writing.

And to Hobbs, I agree, The Gunsligner wasn't my favorite but The Drawing of Three was what got me hooked on the series.

I have enjoyed King's last few books.  He seems to have gotten better since his accident in 99 or 2000.  I liked the Dark Tower books and the graphic novels but it would be tough to translate to the screen or TV.  It is so interconnected to his other books, it would be a massive task doing it justice.  I'm not a huge Howard or Goldsman fan so this actually doesn't bother me that much.
