Universal & Imagine Eyeing LENSMAN Classics

Looks like one of the "founders" of space operas may be hitting a theater near you sometime in the future. Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that Universal & Imagine have entered negotiations with the estate of legendary SF author E.E. "Doc" Smith, the man behind the LENSMAN space series from the 1930s. This series, first published in the Amazing Stories magazine, was a primary influence with a lot of today's authors and filmmakers. Al Trestrail, Smith's grandson and manager of his estate, is the one who let the word out...

"The option would be for 18 months, with another 18 month extension available if needed," he said. "This is being negotiated now. One can only assume at that point if they believe it will be a profitable venture they would move ahead with at least one film."

Plot Concept: The first book Triplanetary was published in 1934 but many sequels came to follow. The series of books spanned millions of years, recounting the struggle between the good Arisians and the evil Eddorians. The books chronicle the rising role of humanity in the ultimate battle as seen through the eyes of the protagonist, Kim Kinnison, who comes to control a key artifact: the lens, a bracelet that bestows telepathy and other powers.

If done right this could be as epic and sweeping as the Star Wars saga. The only problem might be the similarity to Green Lantern which got its inspiration from this series. Love to see this in 3D IMAX .

Monkeyfoot, this is as epic and sweeping as the Star Wars saga, and it might just shoot it in the foot. The fact that Star Wars was based largely on Lensmen is going to lead to direct comparisons and cries of it being a rip-off.

My first reaction to reading this story was the question of whether or not this had anything to do with an anime film from over 20 years ago. It was also called Lensman and the plot sounded vaguely similar, and it turns out the story was adapted into the film. It's been years since I saw the movie, but I did like it and if you can track it down I'd recommend giving it a watch.

yah know, I have never read these books. Now I have too. I have read all most every other classic Sci-Fi author around, but not this guy. Now I feel lame.

I hope they make these movie with great respect and love for the original material as it sounds like they are great books. Just do the Peter Jackson and it will be ok.

Oh, hell yeah!!! Lensmen is like the Jedi Order, absent the strict monk lifestyle, stoic speech, the robes, and self importance, meets the Green Lantern Corps.

Yes...the anime was based upon the Lensmen books but it strayed away from the original material which was hardcore science fiction based, and exotic...with a strong sense of ethereal space opera running through it. The anime had no real substance and was an uninspired paint by the numbers sort of deal.

This reminds me, what about The Foundation Series or Ender's Game? I thought those movies were being made.

This does sound sweet, Star Wars and Green Lantern combined. Anyone knows how many books are in the series?
As studios keep searching for material and digging up some of these obscure works the more we see how everybody has been influenced by past works. Or you can say the more you see how people stole ideas from past works, depending on your point of view.

From Wikipedea:

The complete series of books, in internal sequence, consists of:

Triplanetary
First Lensman
Galactic Patrol
Gray Lensman
Second Stage Lensmen
Children of the Lens

metal thanks for looking it up. I'm thinking about picking up at least the first book to gauge my own opinion.
