Universal Pictures has picked up Richard Regen's spec script Tehran for Brian Grazer to produce through Imagine Entertainment, reports Variety. Regen's script was one the list of " 10 Hot Projects" that Hollywood executives wanted to get into production last year.

Plot Concept: The drama revolves around an American professor who is contracted by the federal government to observe tensions in pre-coup Tehran in 1977. He realizes that Iran is rife with political danger and his viewpoint is backed up when he falls in love with an Iranian girl whose brother is a member of the secret police.

It would be nice if the film referred the the 1953 CIA plot to overthrow a democratic government in Iran by giving power to the brutal Shah of Iran. This rule only led to the irrationally fundamentalist Islamic Revolution of 1979. I also hope the film details how the US responded to a mere hostage crisis by giving Saddam Hussein funds, arms and chemical weapons to use against the Iranian people in an 8-year war. Yet I doubt it will.

I also doubt it will show how the people managed to push for a certain about of liberalization, how a million Iranians took to the streets of Tehran in mourning over 9/11 and how the government helped the US track down Al Qaeda, until American allowed Bush to deliver his unnecessary Axis of Evil speech that frightened Iranians into electing Ahmadinejad. And how the threat of American invasion and bombing has allowed the regime to repress people and motivated it to seek defense perhaps through getting the bomb, since that's the only thing deterring America from invading North Korea. Iran has a right to self-defense, especially given America and Israel's track record of massacre. Whatever the regime's many faults, the West's reaction has only made life worse for Iranians.

What we need is insightful history to educate America, so it doesn't kill even more people, not more simplistic films to encourage even more murder. I'm sick of all this.
