Universal Pictures Ready for IMMORTAL

We usually don't cover comedy news but this one is based off/inspired by the 1986 film, Highlander, says Variety. The trade is reporting that a new supernatural comedy, JEFF THE IMMORTAL, has been bought by Universal Pictures from a Chris Bishop script. Adam Goldberg and Marc Platt will be handling the production under their banners, Vertigo Entertainment & Marc Platt Productions. Bishop is also handling the writing duties of the spoof, Night of the Living Dorks a domestic remake of the 2004 German flick as well as overseeing the upcoming comic adaptation, Wanted, starring Angeline Jolie and James McAvoy.

Here's the plot concept for JEFF THE IMMORTAL:

"It's about a slacker who discovers he has supernatural powers but uses these new-found powers for selfish reasons," Bishop said.

As if Highlander 2 wasn't already enough torture.

Ok, and so how, exactly, is Jeff the Immortal inspired by Highlander?

Ummm...he's immortal? And it's based on Highlander (1986)? Duh! lol

I think I'll pass on this one.

It can't be worse than Highlander: The Source (which is actuall worse than HL2...)

I thought the last couple of Highlander movies were comedies. If we were supposed to take those seriously...

It just hit me... more than Highlander, this sounds like it could be based on Groundhog Day, without the start afresh every day. In the first half, once Phil Connors (Bill Murray) gets over the shock of what is happening, he abuses his apparent immortality for his own amusement.

Does spoofing Highlander really seem like a smart business move to anyone? I mean, how many people are around to get the jokes? And how many people care?

I can't believe anyone would put any kind of financial backing into this movie. The first Highlander was cool but the sequels were spoofs enough by themselves.

This could really be funny if they moved away from the whole Highlander connection. Personally the originial Highlander was good, and I actually liked Endgame, and the T.V. was not bad, but the continuity of the movies was so skewered to the point that it was almost ludicrious. Myrddin how did you see Highlander: the Source? I thought it was coming to T.V. on SciFi in the fall? I agree though move away from Highlander and you could really make a funny movie about a self serving immortal who wreaks havoc throughout time.

I read the plot summary...a slacker having supernatural powers who uses them for selfish reasons.

Highlander is about a race of Immortals battling for supremecy and cutting each others heads off to gain strength and knowledge.

I don't see any connection.

The Source dvd was released in Russia last January. My brother was living in China and brought back the dvd.

I'm a huge fan of the first movie and the tv series. I adopted the name "Myrddin" for the first time over 10 years ago on the Highlander forums.

And I hated the Source more than HL2. Don't visit the official Highlander forums unless you want the ending of Source spoiled. Most of them ordered the dvd from Russia.
