Universal Pushes WANTED To Summer 2008

Universal has made yet another strange decision for one of their future films. It's about as crazy as releasing too many movies in the December 21-25 corridor, something we've discussed in our weekly box office reports. Universal has decided to push WANTED from its March 28, 2008 release to June 27, 2008. The June 27, 2008 weekend is already crowded with its current lineup. Bryan Singer's VALKYRIE and Pixar's WALL-E will also hit theaters on that day in mid summer. It's not strange that a movie production needs more time and the studio pushes it back to a later date. It is strange, however, that the studio thinks having it compete against a Pixar movie & another major tentpole seems like a wise move..

Here's the press release...

Universal Pictures has moved the release date of its hotly anticipated fantasy-action-thriller Wanted from spring to summer. The film will now be released on Friday, June 27, rather than its former release date of March 28.

The film stars James McAvoy (Atonement), Morgan Freeman (The Bucket List), Common (American Gangster) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) as members of a secret society that carries out the orders of fate itself. It is the first English-language film directed by Russian visual pioneer Timur Bekmambetov, creator of the Night Watch series—the most successful film franchise in his country's history. Based upon Mark Millar's explosive graphic novel series, the film is produced by Marc Platt (Legally Blonde), Jason Netter (Painkiller Jane), Jim Lemley (Invincible) and Iain Smith (Children of Men).

In making the date-change announcement, Nikki Rocco, Universal Pictures' President of Distribution, stated, "After an early look at Wanted, we are certain that it fulfills its promise as a stunning, committed, thrilling, eye-popping vision that introduces a bold new narrative. We believe it can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the event titles of the summer and will give audiences a chance to discover a fresh new alternative. We are excited to date the film on June 27."

Wanted tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, the world will be introduced to a hero for a new generation: Wesley Gibson.

25-year-old Wes (James McAvoy) was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut.

Until he met a woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie).

After his estranged father is murdered, the deadly sexy Fox recruits Wes into the Fraternity, a secret society that trains Wes to avenge his dad's death by unlocking his dormant powers. As she teaches him how to develop lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, Wes discovers this team lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: carry out the death orders given by fate itself.

With wickedly brilliant tutors—including the Fraternity's enigmatic leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman)—Wes grows to enjoy all the strength he ever wanted. But, slowly, he begins to realize there is more to his dangerous associates than meets the eye. And as he wavers between newfound heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one could ever teach him: he alone controls his destiny.

Universal Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment present A Marc Platt/Kickstart Production—in association with Top Cow—James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman in Wanted, starring Terence Stamp, Thomas Kretschmann, Common and Angelina Jolie. Casting is by Mindy Marin; music is by Danny Elfman. Co-producers are Mark Millar, J.G. Jones and Chris Carlisle. The costume designer is Varvara Avdyushko; the editor is David Brenner, ACE. Wanted's production designer is John Myhre; the film's director of photography is Mitchell Amundsen. The executive producers are Marc Silvestri, Adam Siegel, Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber. Wanted is produced by Marc Platt, Jason Netter, Jim Lemley and Iain Smith. The film is based on the series of comic books by Millar and J.G. Jones, from a story by Michael Brandt & Derek Haas. Wanted's screenplay is by Michael Brandt & Derek Haas and Chris Morgan. It is directed by Timur Bekmambetov.

They pushed it back because it sucks...and negative fan reaction has started over the unnecessary and vast changes to the film adaptation.

metalwater I think you're right. If they kept to the original schedule it would've been impossible to hide behind other major releases. Now they have a built in excuse if it bombs. I myself thought the book wasn't that good, but changing it doesn't mean better either. And the only work I've seen from Timur was NightWatch, which I thought was overrated by people always willing to applaud anything foreign. I thought it was amateurish and incoherent and got over with the use of special effects and drawing unwarranted comparisons to The Matrix. Having said that I will go see it when it comes out.

I would've thought pushing the film back to become a tentpole summer release would mean Universal was excited about the film. Putting it up against Valkyrie and Wall-E certainly isn't smart (wouldn't releasing it a week prior to those two films be better?), but I would think the studio would only make the move if they feel it would be successful in summer. It could make for a one-two punch along with Incredible Hulk.

Of course, I have no idea what was changed from the comic book to the film and I've never seen any of Timur's films. This could be a stinking pile of feces for all I know.

metalwater and WISEGUY: You don't "hide" a film in the middle of the summer if you think it's not going to do well. You tuck it away in September or March. Moving it FROM March shows that (as rgtchtiger said) Universal has confidence in it.

But I guess it's just easier to default to "because it sucks", huh?

What in the hell is this movie about? I'll never understand why a production company pays for a little known lisence and then changes everything about it. If they think their idea is so great then why just make the movie the want to and call it something else? I want to see Wanted, not Dead Like Me with guns.

They are certainly attempting to dump Wanted alright. If it opened up all by itself with no serious competition and then bombed, as Wise Guy pointed out, everyone would be laughing their asses off throughout the industry. Now, however, NBC/Universal can claim..."Oh, it was the stiff competition...going up against a Pixar film and a Tom Cruise/Bryan Singer film...was just to big an order. That's why our film tanked!!!"

Smart money says that you don't go up against two films...one G-Rated, and one PG, to perhaps PG-13, if you have a movie that is R Rated. Wanted will most certainly open up at number 2 or 3...but not number 1, I can tell you that right now. The family film will win everytime, at least if it is a Pixar/Disney film...which this one, Wall-E, is. In fact, any teens trying to get into see Wanted, it being an R Rated film, and if there are any teens who are interested in this movie now that the super hero/super villain element has been completely taken-out of it...as well as an amazing 95 percent of the characters (???), well, you'll see them pay to see Wall-E as a ruse to gain entry to the theatre...and sneak into see Wanted instead. Wall-E will get the teen box office dollars by default, and Wanted will suffer even more as a direct result. And after the first weekend of release when comic book fans see what a complete abortion of the original source material that the movie version of Wanted is, that will cause instant bad word of mouth...and the film will sink over night.

Don't be surprised if you see the box office slip for Wanted on its 2nd day of release, when disappointed fan boys fail to come back to the theatres, and or, fail to bring their friends and family members for repeat viewings of the film.

Well, The Incredible Hulk comes out on June 13th....I have to agree with Metalwater just a bit....given the fact that Hulk is anticipated, and Wanted is well not all that "Wanted" it would stand to reason that they get you ready for a sweep for the month of June....2 Hero movies by Universal in the same month...box office ticket numbers on those 2 movies alone would make it a profitable month for Universal...

...just a thought.

rgtchtiger is right -- if you think a movie's going to tank you don't dump it in the middle of the summer. You dump it in March or September and hope to grab as much money as you can because the markets less saturated with genre-type movies at that point. They're putting Wanted there because they think they've got something BIG. (Poor suckers)

The comic book was pretty good -- or at least tried to be. The movie looks okay but nothing like the comic book I read, which is unfortunate.

When I saw the trailer i thought to myself: where the hell is Wanted??? I mean seriously, this doesn't even deserve to carry the freakin' title! I like Angelina but hey this movie should be called "Anorexic Angie-who-can-shoot-like-a-dream." It seems that the movie focuses more on Angie's curves than how the bullet should "curve." Loved the book. The trailer appears to be galaxies away from it. Bad move Millar for letting Universal create crap out of your beautiful baby. This (like the crapfest Daredevil movie) i hope will serve as a cautionary tale for all of those brilliant comic book creators in the future!Geez what a waste!
