It's been over two years since Dracula Year Zero seemed like a done deal for Universal Pictures. Alex Proyas had been attached to direct and Sam Worthington was circling the title role. Due to budget concerns at the time, that never came to be for fans of the iconic vampire.
Flash forward to this weekend and it looks like the executives over at Universal are pulling the project out of development hell, with Deadline reporting the studio has entered negotiations with director Gary Shore to lead at the helm. With Shore gaining notice from his short The Cup of Tears (see below)---a project in which Universal also acquired for feature film treatment---the "Dracula" origin tale will be his feature directorial debut.
Shore will be working from a recently rewritten screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
Here's the short trailer for Shore's The Cup of Tears. Check it out and sound off on whether he has the skills for a new Dracula movie.
I'm always up for another Dracula flick. Love the way it has turned out so many different variant versions by some recent takes on a classic character. I hope for the very best with this one, and the visual stylings of Gary Shore could be interesting, but he seems to remind me of Zach Snyder a bit too much. Fingers crossed for a good take on an excellent character.
I second Roqueja's thought, the iconic king of the vampires is always worth seeing (unless it's in a SyFy Originals film). The Cup of Tears trailer though has me a bit confused. I'm seeing Japanese samurai along with what looks to be combat satelites and missiles. Is it a period piece or a scifi story?
Unrelated topic: I recently saw a trailer for a movie called Iron Sky. Granted it's a foreign film, made in Finland, but it still seems like it'd be right up Mania's alley. Why have I not heard about it here?
The trailer looked somewhat cool but it's hard to draw any conclusion from that to a Dracula movie unless Dracula is visiting Japan during the time of the samurai in the film.
Actually FerrteJohn that film has been discussed here several times in the past, Jarrod had even put up one of their first teaser trailer seems like more than a year ago. It had been in production for a long time and if I'm not mistaken is due for a US release soon but it will probably be very limited from the last I read. I know I'd love to see it, Nazis making a comeback after hiding on the moon for decades, who wouldn't like to see that...in film that is
Wow, this guys got a fantastic style. It is perfectly suited for genre films. His Dracula will be a great spectacle. I hope he is able to tell a story with characters you can relate to as well as geek you out with great shots.
Had me convinced till the cutscene 'Fall of an empire was only the beginning' and then it looked like it was hurried and pieced together. Like he took his time and had a vision, but had no idea where to go.
I love the 300/sucker punch look however, but it has to be done just right.
This "Cup of Tears" trailer looks impressive but obviously it's much easier to make a good trailer than an actual movie. But having said that, based on the trailer I'm certainly more than willing to give this Gary Shore fellow a chance to prove himself to the world.
I'm still tripping that the supposed "hero" looked to be of the caucasion persuasion not asian. and WTF is up with the robots - is this some kind of anime?
Also just from that trailer I couldn't tel you if this guy would make a good Dracula movie.
