Universal Pictures has switched the release dates of THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR and HELLBOY 2: THE GOLDEN ARMY. The 3rd installment of the Mummy franchise has now been moved back to August 1, 2008 while the second installment in the Hellboy franchise will open up in theaters on July 11, 2008.

What does this mean?

Now, Hellboy (Ron Pearlman) has only one week before the DARK KNIGHT hits theaters on July 18, 2008. He will also be going up against a Ben Stiller comedy, TROPIC THUNDER, on July 11.

Well, its not like Hellboy is expected to be some huge summer blockbuster. The first one made its money back and some, but wasn`t all that big, which is fine with me. I liked Hellboy and will be looking forward to this second installment. While I enjoyed the Mummy movies, I can wait.

Yes, but this time the director is helming the project with an academy award under his belt. I'm sure they will play that up and the switch means they have confidence that this will indeed be a blockbuster.

Thinking of a maxiumum of a two weeks window for blockbusters, the DARK KNIGHT and HELLBOY 2 don't each other that much. Internationally the first part of both movies weren't the megasensation of a success. They just did well.

Well I'm happy. I'm looking forward to Hellboy 2 much more than Mummy 3.

I think this says the studio has more faith in Hellboy 2 than the Mummy 3. They must have some geniuses working over there. (Although Mummy 3 could be lots of fun.)

Hellboy doesn't seem like a summer blockbuster to me, though. I'm worried about it getting lost against movies like the Dark Knight. Still, I'm stoked that we actually got a second one. Del Toro is obviously doing this movie out of love for the characters and comic.

I honestly think they are hoping that Hellboy2 can ride the coat tails of Dark Night. If they can get a good helping of word-of-mouth in the first week then people who can't beat the crowd for Dark Night will slip into Hellboy2. Studio's try this all the time, and it often works out to make for a good summer sleeper hit.

Actually, Pony...I'd be willing to bet Hellboy hardly made any profit at all when you factor in marketing costs on top of that $66 million dollar budget. I'm still not sure how the sequel got greenlighted.

I think they said its DVD sales were great.

I loved Hellboy, so this is good.... but I'm looking forward to some Mummy popcorn fun as well... all that said if I could only see one of the three it's going to be the Dark Knight....

I don't recall Hellboy being marketted very aggressively. I imagine it got the green light because it did pretty well DESPITE the marketing.

According to wikipedia (which is admittedly very hit or miss in regard to accuracy), it made back almost all of it's money domestically ($59+M), internationally, it brought back around $100M
