Universal to remake "The Host"

By: Karl Schneider

According to Sci Fi Wire, Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the Korean-language monster movie, The Host, and plans to remake the film for American audiences.

The film centers on a dysfunctional family that must overcome its differences to save its daughter, who's been grabbed by a creature that an unresponsive government declares is the host of an unidentified virus.

The Korean version opened on March 9th in North America, making over $300,000 on 71 screens.

KJ's Take:  This was one of the better monster films to come out in recent memory, and certainly put crap like the last Godzilla to shame.  Not sure how I feel about the American remake, are subtitles that big of a deal?

I think that they should've released this to more screens. If theater owners do this more often, I think that American movie watchers will start to get used to subtitles (at least the ones that know how to read). I've rented more Asian films this past year than I've probably seen my whole life.

However, I just don't care how many times Hollywood does remakes anymore. After the "re-telling" of Psycho... there is no point in wasting our energy to complain. When is the remake of Casablanca or Citizen Kane coming? And twenty years from now, they'll remake Star Wars.... but I guess Lucas kinda did that already.

This is no surprise..... although i am sure some will be surprised.... and angry.... and disappointed.... just not sure why.

I`m just going to say this. It is pure Western arrogance, ignorance, and greed that has these studios remaking all these Asian flicks. There really is no need. The studios think they`ll make bank of the flick because its a cool idea. Most people who don`t like subtitles or are too stupid to be bothered to read them won't go see these in theaters so they`ll be happy for an "americanized" version and studios also feel that by them remaking it, that they will somehow make it better, their way.
If I was an Asian filmmaker, I wouldn't sell my shit to the studios so they could hack it up, but they pay big money, so I can see why they do it. Its also a way to get into the Western movie market. It worked for John Woo ,Ang Lee and that other dude.

This cracks me up, they can't even wait a couple of years before they remake this one. It's getting out of hand, I read a review about the movie and it sounds good, I would much rather watch the korean language one then some crappy american remake.

Why does this get complaints, where the remake of "Internal Affairs" into "The Departed" does not? As for remaking this movie, I don't think it is a good idea. The humor will not be captured probally, unless they get a writer/ director like Shane Black or something. But as for bashing the remakes, give it a rest....some of the best movies over the years have been remakes, even back in the day.....so, let it go

They might get into the government conspiracy political subtext by setting it in New Orleans or something.

BTW, Casablanca was remade as a TV series. Three times!

Please not Citizen Kane, it's not even funny to joke about that ... okay maybe a little funny. That is the mother of all movies, I think Hell would officially be open for skiiing if they remade that movie. I agree this movie should not be remade, but not because I'm a remake basher (which I just might be), but because this movie hasn't even had it's run yet. Give it a while and let's see where it goes. I would also like to see more subtitled movies open to a broader set of theatres, I really wish I would have seen House of Flying Daggers on the really big screen.

"Infernal Affairs" was a pretty old flick and it wasn't so much remade as it was reimagined. The premise and theme is basically the same, but the story is very different. Also, these are very different genres. Most John Woo flicks have been remade/reimagined, but we don't complain because the core of an action/drama flick is basically the same. This is probably going to be just an americanized retelling of the exact same story, like The Ring, Grudge and every other Asian horror flick that has been redone.

whiskey, the reason this gets complaints are that movies like the departed are the exception, it was adapted into an excellent american movie. The norm is along the lines of premonition, which has been adapted into an american pos. Hollywood has the tendency to dumb movies down for the US audience, and we keep buying into it. IMO, it isn't a problem that movies get remade, it is the fact that audiences don't want to see other cultures, hear other languages and read subtitles. I personally have spent my movie time watching more and more Asian cinema, reading subtitles and all, instead of watching mediocre Hollywood movies. Unfortunately most Americans won't do that, and they are missing out on some great films.

I'm confused already, looking at Mania's banner ad for a movie thats playing in theaters NOW called The Host.
why subtitles?... I prefer a good dub anyday.. it worked for Jackie Chan.
