Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the children fantasy novel, THE NIGHT TOURIST, says Variety. The book, authored by Katherine Marsh and published by Hyperion Books, will be developed for the big screen by Chris Meledandri. While no writer is yet attached to the project, Courtney Pledger and John Cohen are producing it.

Plot Concept: Centers on a ninth-grade classics prodigy who discovers New York's underworld with the help of a girl he meets at Grand Central Station. He discovers many secrets about his pal while searching for a glimpse of his late mother in this secret world.

"children fantasy novel" "late mother" ... The number of stories involing children escaping to a fantasy world (to one degree or another) especially in the face of stress/death seems to rapidly increasing, and hopefully this will lead to better things and not just feel like repitition.

At a young age, we are often lost in our imaginations, and when we lose someone or are in a stressful environment, it's easier to turn to such fantasies. Having lost an older cousin/best friend at the age of 10, who coincidentally introduced me to D&D, I feel an affection to this type of film, but let's not beat it to -- death.
