As Maniac Flint has passed along, shortly after one Memphis network said Freeman was in serious condition, a new update from The Clairon-Ledger has updated that other than some broken bones, the actor is fine.
Actor Morgan Freeman suffered some broken bones in a car accident Sunday, but will recover, friends said this afternoon.
Freeman, 71, and a passenger, Demaris Meyer, age unknown, were airlifted to a Memphis hospital following a single-car accident around 11:30 pm. Meyer's condition was not immediately available.
Freeman’s business partner, Bill Luckett of Clarksdale, visited with the actor at the hospital today and said Freeman will be fine.
"He's resting quietly and has some fractures. Nothing life-threatening. Nothing permanent," Luckett said. "He's in good spirits, but he's in some pain."
Filmmaker Paul Saltzman said Freeman suffered a broken shoulder and a broken arm and expected recovery time will be six to eight weeks.
News has just hit the wires from a Memphis news outlet that thespian Morgan Freeman was involved in a serious accident and had to be air lifted to the hospital. Here's the statement from WMCTV:
Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman was involved in a serious car accident Sunday night in north Mississippi.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesperson Ben Williams said Freeman, 71, and a passenger, Demaris Meyer, were traveling eastbound on Mississippi Highway 32 around 11:30pm in Tallahatchie County when his vehicle went off the edge of the road. Freeman overcorrected, flipping his 1997 Nissan Maxima several times before coming to a rest.
Emergency crews removed Freeman and Meyer from the vehicle using the jaws of life. According to Williams, they were both airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.
Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, told the AP he arrived at the scene soon after the accident happened. McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman's car was airborne when it left the highway and landed in a ditch.
McFerrin said bystanders converged on the scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor.
When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, McFerrin said Freeman joked, "no freebies, no freebies."
Kathy Stringer, a spokesperson at The MED, said Freeman was listed in serious condition Monday morning.
The AP reported the Maxima is owned by Meyer, a Memphis resident. Her condition has not been released.
