Update: Third time is the charm, right? As expected, the trades did follow up this morning and confirmed that Channing Tatum is indeed the new "Duke" for the upcoming adaptation. They also say that Sam Worthington was originally set to star as the character but had to bow out due to conflicting schedules with Cameron's Avatar 3D. You can see the HR report here.
Variety has also confirmed that actor Dennis Quaid will play General Hawk, the grizzled team leader of the Joes.
And the news keeps on coming...IESB is reporting that Arnold Vosloo, who has worked with director Stephen Sommers on the Mummy films, is now cast as Zartan, a mercenary who works with Destro and Cobra. The trades didn't confirm the Vosloo casting but it fits so it's getting passed along..
Previous: It's up to you to believe it but AICN is reporting they have confirmed that Channing Tatum will be playing "Duke" in the upcoming G.I Joe. Latino Review was the first to report he was up for the part but as I say, AICN says they have a confirmation. If it's a done deal, the trades will soon follow with a press release. Tatum, who was also cast this morning in Public Enemies, will be joining Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui, Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the upcoming adaptation of the action-adventure for Paramount.
Plot Summary: The movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.
G.I Joe will hit theaters Aug 7, 2009.
