Update:VALKYRIE Not Banned in Germany

Earlier this week, it was announced that Germany would not allow filming of Bryan Singer's latest WWII thriller VALKYRIE on their military sites. Why, you ask? Because of the religious beliefs of leading star, Tom Cruise. The German Defense Minister went on public record stating how Germany does not recognize Scientology and they would not allow an actor who is a member of that "cult" to portray a German officer on their land in any movie planned by United Artists.

Despite that earlier report, German officials have either changed their minds or tired of the complaints following the decision. It looks as if the country will now allow the WWII thriller to film on their historical sites according to Variety.

"In this country we have constitutionally guaranteed rights," Kuehnau said. "Articles four and five of the constitution protect freedom of faith and creed and freedom of expression. I don't think those rights would be denied a film actor."

Cruise is set to play German officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, a national hero who was executed in 1944 for attempting to assassinate Adolf Hitler in a plot codenamed VALKYRIE.The courtyard in which Stauffenberg and his fellow conspirators were shot is now a memorial, but the building in which it's located, the Bendlerblock, also houses part of the German Ministry of Defense.

A mighty thanks for Scoopers "Monkeyfoot" and "DaForce" for the headsup!

I read in another article how Stauffenberg's son does not want Cruise to portray his father.

"Stauffenberg's son Berthold Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg has spoken out against Cruise playing the role, telling the Sueddeutsche Zeitung that "he should keep his fingers off my father," and adding that he feared the movie would be "terrible kitsch." "

Of course it does not eleborate if he simply does not want a movie made period, or if he feels the way he does due to Tom Cruise being a phycho cultist.

If anyone can pull this off, it's Cruise...and I'm sure his production studio greased the wheels.

I'll admit Cruise is a "psycho cultist" but how different is that than another actor with his/her own public agenda albeit political, spiritual or religious? Bottom line is he's a capable and great actor. Period. He delivers. That's where he should be judged upon. And if you subscribe to judging him based on tabloid sensationalism then you gotta ask yourself your true motives for being into movies...

sharpe95th, gotta disagree on the "great" part of your Cruise diagnosis. I will agree with the "capable" actor. It's true that Cruise doesn't make a movie bad. It just seems to me that most everything he is in would have been just as good (if not better) with a different actor playing the part. So, that said, whenever I see Cruise, all I think is "that capable guy who's slowly going apeshit in the public eye."

I agree wtih you, TKay42one. I might be in the minority, but I've never felt that Tom Cruise was good at roles where he had to show romantic love, parental love, or any depth of concern. He really rocks in roles where he plays someone disaffected or unstable: Magnolia, Vanilla Sky, were great roles for him. Even Minority Report (where he plays someone morally compromised) was pretty good.

I'm afraid he just won't be able to deliver in a role that requires very little action and a lot of depth. Granted, he's not as wooden as Ben Affleck, but he just isn't able to convey certain emotions. Leaves me cold.

In later news it was revealed that the German government has declared Scientology the national religion.

That is all.

Bah. As I said before, Germany has the right to make this decision. One way or another.

Take away Risky Business, Interview with a Vampire and Minority Report then you'll have no Tom Cruise movies I need see again. I just don't see the talent.
He's not horrible, but he's not a draw for me or anyone I personally know (maybe my sister like twenty years ago.)

And you should judge a person on their actions and beliefs, not on whether they are entertaining. ;)

I'm just glad the movie will be more authentic in the correct locations, however I just can't see Tom as a Nazi????

Have we ever seen Cruise perform with an accent? I just can't think of any movies where he's done one, and for some reason I cringe at the thought of him doing an accent (Costner's Robin Hood comes to mind).

Not that he would have to do an accent, but it seems most Hollywood Nazis have a German or (strangely enough) a British accent. And I just don't see Singer and Cruise going all "Apocalypto" and actually making it a German-language film with subtitles.

He used a slight Irish accent in Far and Away with Nicole :)
