Vadim Perelman Possibly Directing POLTERGEIST

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Tuesday, September 02, 2008
Source: Bloody-Disgusting

Looks like Bloody-Disgusting may have been on to something last week when they said Ukraine-born director Vadim Perelman was up for the top job of the Poltergeist remake. HR is confirming that the director of The Life Before Her Eyes and House of Sand and Fog is in talks with MGM to direct the remake of the Spielberg classic. If the deal goes through, Perelman may be in a position to consult with Spielberg if he chooses to.

Steven and Vadim have a history when they worked together on bringing about the adaptation of Talisman, based on the Stephen King-Peter Straub novel, before that film eventually fell into development hell.

Boogeyman writers
Juliet Snowden and Stiles White are currently penning a revision of the 1982 hit.

I didn't comment before on this remake but I just don't think you can duplicate the success of the original. Of course the special effects are better now but that film was gold at the time and I just can't see a remake matching it in any way.

This guy only has two films to his credit too. House of Sand and Fog I saw, what a depressing movie but I did like it. He must've impressed Spielberg when working on the Talisman adaptation if he's backing the guy. Or is he backing him knowing that he'll suck and therefore be praised even more once this new take is lambasted by all.

Oh and the Boogeyman writers don't exactly inspire confidence in this project either. Boogeyman was trash, IMHO.

I wish Spielberg would get back on trying to get The Talisman to the screen. I enjoyed that book. But maybe we've had too much of kid led fantasies of late.

Wiseguy...I could not agree more...I usually tell you guys or those of you that complain about remakes that it does not change the way we feel about the original but in this case (because it is one of my favorite movies) I just don't feel they can take me to that place the first one did...Case and point, the Hitcher remake did not even come close to the original but hey, let's hope for the best here...And yes, it would be nice to see Spielberg get back in the game for Talisman...

Oh, please, for the love of all things unholy, leave this alone!!!

Why?!?!?!? Some horror remakes you can understand as effects can be updated and such. Don't much like it when they do it, but I can understand why they do it. But THIS? there is piss all wrong with it! And I KNOW I will not watch a remake. The one thing I hope they do though, if this goes the whole ten yards, is please, please, please keep the story as is. Too many classics have been 'remade/rebooted/reanimated' with little to do with the originals cos they change the story too much.

And i'm with Wiseguy.... Boogeyman writers? that line alone gives me chills of how abysmal this project will end up being.

Hey Wise, there's no word yet on what Spielberg thinks about the Boogeymen ppl writing a remake of his classic...or this latest development. I don't think anyone has asked Tobe either.

I just put that in above because it shows that Perelman and Spielberg at least know each other, having once worked together on adapting The Talisman.

Now, whether Perelman consults with Steven on the remake is his choice.

I know I'm not happy about this remake...

I see Jarrod. I took it for them been in talks already for some reason.
I'm like mla in that I usually don't have a problem with remakes but I guess this one crosses the line for me. It seems unnecessary to the Nth degree.

I would love to hear how Spielberg really feels about someone tackling one of his classics.

I could go off on my usual rant about remakes but I've said plenty on this film the last time it came up.

I did see on some TV show someone comment that studios have people now whose sole job is to go over all their owned properties looking for films to remake. I'm sure most of what they are looking at are films that are barely 20 years old.

I think those of you who have seen me post on here know that I hate remakes with a passion. Every once in a while we get a remake that does at least equal, or even sometimes(rarely)surpass the original. Case in point: Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original 1955 version is a classic, but the 1978 remake is/was, in almost every way, a better adaptation of the story and far creepier. But that doesn't mean the 1955 version was bad. Far from it. So, even though I hate remakes, THERE is one example of one being done right.

Now, with this remake on the horizon, I MUST comment that Poltergeist is NOT a movie that should be remade, period. Other than the FX looking somewhat dated(though still scary as hell), Poltergeist is THE BEST ghost movie of all-time! It doesn't NEED to be remade. If someone today has never seen it, then don't remake it, let them watch the original movie on DVD! Besides, what actress will top JoBeth Williams as MILF of the decade from that movie?(Ok, silly point, but I just LOVE Mrs. Williams in Poltergeist......so HOT!!)

This was before home pc's iPods, internet, and when video game systems were for geeks only, so I can already see some HIGH TECH ghosting(like scary images on the PC's, or iPods that float around spouting, "Don't go into the light!"). They'll ruin the whole thing like they did when the remade The Fog. Special Effects don't mean scary, folks! Hollywood, you listening? Didn't think so.

Besides, Mr. Jerry Goldsmith is no longer with us, and I doubt anyone today could top his music that worked SOOOOO well in Poltergeist.

And anyone here who liked the Original has to admit The Strom scenes were PERFECTLY DONE and made innocent thunder storms take on a more menacing feel! (rumble)...1....2.....3....4...(rumble)......1......2......3....(rumble).....1......2...(CRACK!!!!!! RUMBLE!!!).....Hello Mr.Tree....what are you doing in my bedroom?

hanso • Sep 02, 2008, 08:06am •
The only guy they should get to remake this is Steven Spielberg himself. Then it would surpass the original. Do it, Steven. Do.It!
Show em how remakes are done.

irascible • Sep 02, 2008, 10:02am •
No way Hanso - Spielberg would have it end up that aliens were in the house instead of ghosts... and just FYI people: Spielberg wrote/produced it. Tobe Hooper Directed. Don't forget Tobe.

It's a fucking travesty. Why the hell can't the studios just to the Talisman instead??

I watched this with my son the other day and him and his friend said it was the scariest movie they had ever seen. This is from my 12 year old who told me through out Star Wars A New Hope, how fake it was and looked. He actually bought into Poltergiest and was scared and enjoyed it, even with all the outdated effects.
To add to the legend of Poltergiest is the way the little girl died years later and started getting sick during the third movie. It added a little more fear to me when I was young watching these movies. I would hate to see her replaced by anyone.
