Varese does the Kung Fu Hustle

One of the most amazing Asian films of recent years is Stephen Chow's KUNG FU HUSTLE. Released in Hong Kong last year and already available as a Region 2 DVD, the film is now hitting American cinema screens, spurred by the success of such films as HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.
The film is an eclectic mix of comedy, martial arts action, and high fantasy, using CGI to tremendous and agreeably over-the-top effect as the story tells of the battle between a violent urban gang and a gaggle of martial arts experts in a dusty, rural township. The storyline is so wild that it's to the credit of director Wong and his cast members that it stays so well on track, with its vivid sense of humor keeping its many visual indulgences accessible.
The film contains a versatile and compelling exotic soundtrack by Raymond Wong, while also incorporating for humorous effect such classical pieces as Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen and Khachaturian's famous Sabre Dance. The soundtrack is now in release on Varese Sarabande Records.
