Variety has confirmed earlier reports that Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star in the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film, The Happening.

Wahlberg will play a man who takes his family on the run when a cataclysmic natural crisis threatens to end the world.

"Mark has a unique blend of charisma, humanity, authenticity and skillfulness as an actor," Shyamalan said, "all of which coalesced at this moment in his career, making him the perfect person to take on the role of Eliot Moore, the science teacher at the center of this event."

Fox has set the release of the film as June 13, 2008.

I thought M. Night Shyamalan was directing commercials for Peters restaurant....

I think its cool Mark Wahlberg has finally come into his own. I always thought that he was a pretty good actor, but as he`s gotten older, he has become better and it seems his peers have recognized that especially after the Departed. Its crazy how just one break out role can just have all of Hollywood knocking at your door.

I agree with ponyboy76; Wahlberg's really grown into a good actor. I look forward to seeing his projects; he has that "everyman" vibe to his work.

This is going to be a great move and movIe. This could be the movie that redeems M. Night Shyamalan. Lets get a hot chick in there for once though! Don't get me wrong, Bryce is cute....but we need HOT!

M. Night needs to hit this one out of the park, and this casting helps.

Yeah, M. Night needs a strong showing with this film both with the critics and box office. Maybe his studio troubles brought his ego back down to earth a little. He's a great director, but I think he read a little too much of his own press for a while.

M. Night's never had a problem with casting his roles. He lacks the ability to write compelling stories or characters that deserve the brilliant names he often picks. He has great ideas, but no clue how to make them work. I'd like to see him direct some one else's scripts, giving up on trying to be the savant he thinks he is.
