Universal Pictures has signed director Gore Verbinski (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) to helm the big screen adaptation of the videogame BIOSHOCK.  He will also produce along with Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick.

The story takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of Ayn Rand, but things have gone disastrously wrong. Players control a pilot who crash-lands at a secret entrance to the city, called Rapture, and is drawn into a power struggle during which he discovers that his will is not as free as he'd thought.

Verbinski told Variety, "I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential.  Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."

Though no release date is even being targeted, Verbinski said he plans to start pre-production as soon as John Logan's script is finished and approved by all involved.

Take-Two is developing a videogame sequel to BIOSHOCK which will be released in 2009.

I might get a little sh t for this but I think Keanu Reeves would be great for the lead part in this movie...He just seems to fit the part nicely which does not seem to need a lot of depth in the character and then I could be wrong and this character needs sh t loads of depth...I'm looking forward to this because it is a kick ass story and game...Just take your time, do it right and all should be good...

I only played the demo for this game, but what I played of it seemed quite deep, involving, and interesting. I agree that this property is full of cinematic potential. I especially enjoyed the message delivered through the envisioning of the concept of a world without moral boundaries in biological science and how injurious it could be for our society (embryonic stem cells, cloning, etc.).

I thought I was the only one who was bored with Call of Duty 4, after the whopping 5 hours of the single player, and ten minutes of multi, I went back to Bioshock and Halo 3.

Bioshock remains one of the best games of all time, let alone one of the most immersive, imaginative titles I've ever played. Verbinski should be able to pull this off. As for Depp or Reeves in the lead? I could go either way. Keanu is a much better actor than he gets credit for and the main character Jack, had no speaking lines in the game, so as long as he has chain tattoos on his wrists the actor could be anybody, really, there's no preconceived perceptions as to how he should sound. Both of those guys would be good choices. It's imperative that they maintain the atmosphere. The way that the actors in that game world mimicked 1940's and 50's culture is unsurpassed. I really hope this turns out well. I will be heartbroken otherwise.

Daniel Craig would be a great Atlas, but you're giving a bit of a spoiler there Scriber, some of these unfortunate dudes might not have come to that revelation yet.

You know what, when he's done with Bioshock he can feel free to get to work on Half Life. He's got the right eye for that one too. Ed Norton as Gordon Freeman. That would be awesome.

Vaporman, go obtain this game. I cannot stress that highly enough. The demo is the hook, but it doesn't even give you a taste of what's in store. Do yourself a whopping favour, beg, borrow, rent (don't steal), but grab this sucker and take a couple of days off work.

Definitely a game worth playing through. Only second to Mass Effect as my favorite game of the year. Big Daddy's on the big screen will be pretty sweet to see.

I liked Bioshock and all, but I can't help but thinking it gets a little over rated. I do think the story was above average, and among most video game stories it does stand out as one of the better ones. I bought the game, beat it (got all the achievements) and traded it back in)

scytheofluna, as far as Half-Life goes, I'm pretty sure that Valve has said they don't ever want to licence it for a movie. I believe they want the games to stand for themselves. Part of the reason they have never had Gordon Freeman talk, is that they want the player to feel part of the story. The Half-Life games are my favorites by the way.
